I earned A grades in Calculus III, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Probability and Statistics, and I am a co-author on two peer-reviewed biology papers. German is my first language; I grew up in Heilbronn and completed my secondary schooling there.

I tutor calculus, trigonometry, and differential equations, the core of my mathematics degree, and biology, which I studied through coursework in genetics, pharmacology, and drug discovery and a master's thesis on T cell signaling. In German I work on conversation, reading, and everyday usage.

My teaching has been one-on-one and in small groups rather than in a classroom. From 2018 to 2023, as an undergraduate and then a graduate student, I was regularly the one in a study group who re-explained our mathematics and biology coursework to classmates who were stuck, students aged roughly eighteen to thirty. At Brown I trained fellow students in laboratory techniques one at a time, standing beside them through a full procedure until they could run it without me.

When a student is lost, I do not re-explain from the beginning, because the explanation that failed once usually fails again. I ask questions until I can see where the understanding actually broke, then explain from that point in a different order, often with an example from the student's own field, since many biology students meet calculus only as a requirement. The student then works problems while I watch, I correct the one thing that is actually going wrong, and I step back as soon as they no longer need me. In German I build fluency through conversation and reading rather than grammar drills. I am glad to talk before a first lesson.

Biology

I earned an ScM in Biotechnology from Brown University and a BSc in Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences–Biology from Plymouth State University, graduating summa cum laude. My research experience spans molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, and quantitative biology, and I have worked in academic research at Brown, Dartmouth, and Tufts. I am a co-author of Gonzalez, Hildebrandt & O’Donnell, “Characterizing Hox genes in mayflies (Ephemeroptera), with Hexagenia limbata as a new mayfly model,” published in EvoDevo (2022), and Callahan et al., “Deep phosphotyrosine characterisation of primary murine T cells using broad spectrum optimisation of selective triggering,” published in Proteomics (2024). I bring that research background into tutoring by helping students understand biological concepts, experimental design, data interpretation, and the reasoning behind what they are learning.
German

German

German is my first language, and I grew up in Heilbronn in southern Germany, where I finished my secondary schooling at a Wirtschaftsgymnasium, a business-focused academic high school. I later moved to the United States and earned a master's degree from Brown University, so I can explain German in clear English rather than only demonstrate it. I am most useful for conversation, listening, and reading, and for the usage and register that are hard to take from a textbook: what actually sounds right in a given situation, and why. That suits students in high school or college German who need speaking practice, adults preparing to live or work in Germany, and anyone who wants business or scientific German from someone who has used both.

Attentive and organized!

Tobias is an excellent physics tutor who is attentive, organized, and genuinely invested in making sure I understand the material. His homework assignments are always well-organized, and he regularly asks questions during lessons to check my understanding and make sure I’m following along. He takes the time to explain concepts clearly and makes lessons feel structured and productive. I really appreciate how thoughtful he is about my learning and would highly recommend him to other students!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Very encouraging and good at explaining concepts, teaches the material without giving answers. Was very diligent about tailoring the lessons to my unique needs. He's also very honest about what's best for his students and wants to help you in the best way possible.

Excellent Tutor !!

My daughter was having a difficult time with AP Calculus AB, and Tobias has been an incredibly patient, attentive, and supportive tutor. He took the time to understand where she was struggling, identify gaps in her knowledge, and help her build a stronger foundation in the subject. His thoughtful approach and clear explanations have made a tremendous difference. Thanks to his guidance, my daughter now has a much better understanding of the core concepts and, more importantly, has regained her confidence in tackling challenging problems. I would highly recommend Tobias to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and caring tutor.

Knowledgeable and engaged tutor

My daughter is so pleased with her Physics 2 lessons with Tobias. He spends hours preparing for the sessions, he makes his own problems sets, explains complex material and brings a new ways of understanding the material. He has taken additional time to ask my daughter about college applications outside of the tutoring. I could not reccomend him more

Valuable test preparation

Tobias was a life-saver and scheduled a last-minute tutoring session to help my son prepare for a pre-calc test. They reviewed the material my son had been struggling with. Coming out of the test my son reported that the felt most confident with the material they had reviewed and wished he had started sooner with Tobias. We're continuing to work with Tobias to bolster my son's understanding of pre-calc.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor!

Tobias provides the guidance I'm looking for when I have difficulty understanding material. As a student who wants to understand the "why" behind steps toward solving a problem, Tobias has helped me find that deeper explanation with his own expertise and patience so I am more confident in my abilities to solve problems alone.
