I am a semi-retired attorney and skilled one-on-one tutor. I bring patience, creativity and a sense of humor to my lessons, working both to build a strong foundation of substantive knowledge and to pass along useful shortcuts and strategies for breaking down difficult problems into manageable pieces.

My tutoring focuses on four broad categories: Middle School/High School Math and Science; Writing and Grammar assistance for clients from middle school through working professionals; Standardized Test preparation; and Law/Legal Writing/Bar Exam preparation.

I have a life-long passion for learning, teaching and persuasion. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with science and technology, current events and politics, and the arts of strategy and presenting winning arguments. I excelled in all my core academic subjects through high school, particularly math and science. I have a knack for performing well on standardized tests, with scores above 93rd percentile on the SAT and LSAT.

I enrolled at M.I.T. intent on becoming a world-changing scientist or engineer. While pursuing my studies in Chemical Engineering, I financed my education by working as a tutor for the MIT/Wellesley Upward Bound program: for three academic years I tutored high school students after school in all subjects, and for three summers I was a Math and English Teaching Assistant with classroom and tutoring responsibilities at an intensive residential summer school at Wellesley College. Through these years and experiences I came to realize that while I still loved chemistry, math and technology in general, I was more comfortable and fulfilled explaining technical issues and educating/persuading target audiences than I was with the day to day practice of engineering.

I chose to study law at Boston College, followed by a career as a courtroom advocate for doctors, hospitals and other scientific clients. Throughout this time, I mentored and trained younger lawyers on analyzing complex medical records, legal research, and the art

Bar Exam

Bar Exam

I graduated BC Law and passed the Massachusetts Bar on my first attempt. After clerking for a Justice of the NH Supreme Court, I have practiced civil trial and appellate litigation for more than 25 years, specializing in complex legal issues and mentoring junior attorneys. Ten years into my practice, I passed the NH Bar on one attempt and with less than a week of study time. I have excelled at high stakes standardized tests my whole life, and have extensive one-on-one and small-group tutoring experience.
Law

Law

I am an actively licensed attorney in Massachusetts. I have years of experience reviewing and drafting all manner of legal communications, from objective summaries of facts or testimony to subjective analyses of credibility and potential liability under governing law. Whether the task is routine professional correspondence with a client, colleague or adversary; analyzing or editing a contract; drafting a settlement demand or offer; or persuading a trial judge or appeals court of the merits of my client's position, I excel at finding the most effective tone and language for the task at hand.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have been a practicing trial and appellate attorney for 30 years. Over that span I appeared in court many hundreds of times, tried dozens of cases before juries, and presented arguments/responded to questions from panels of Appeals Court judges. I have also had the opportunity to observe, learn from and critique courtroom and other public speaking on literally thousands of occasions, running the gamut from brilliant oratory and persuasion to ill-prepared and ineffective ramblings. While I suspect there would be few occasions where I might be called upon to tutor public speaking, I have no doubt in my ability to do so.

Excellent tutor! Helped me through several classes that were very difficult

John was an amazing tutor and always available to help! He was great at explaining things in a way I could understand and showed genuine concern and patience while working with me on my college level math courses. I would definitely reccommend John to anyone looking for a great and patient tutor.

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Molly. We started out meeting in person, and successfully transitioned to online sessions when Covid struck Massachusetts. I was happy to see your hard work pay off!

We already see a difference

John took the time to get to know our student, to assess her strengths, and dig right into the content for a test the next day. Already looking forward to the next session - thanks, John!.

Helpful and knowledgeable tutor

John is very flexible and helps our son with whatever he needs. Our son is feeling more confident with math since working with John. We since have found that John also is able to help our son with Chemistry, too, so that will be helpful in the future.

Knowledgeable, patient and really helpful

John is one of the most amazing tutors I have ever had. He helped me figure out a better way to express and convey my ideas; corrected tons of my grammar errors, and strengthened the logic flow. He is patient, knowledgeable and he has passion for what he is doing. I highly recommend him if you need help with your papers.
