I am Karyn. I am a retired ELA and Geography middle school teacher (June 2023) with 30+ years of experience. I have a masters degree in Middle School Education and hold a current Massachusetts license for Middle School (grades 5-9). I also hold the SEI endorsement for teaching English Language Learners. I spent many years teaching Grade 7 ELA , before transitioning to only geography. I am experienced with both physical and cultural geography and have taught literature, content area reading (non fiction), writing, spelling and grammar. Lessons taught frequently included literacy skills such as inferencing, citing evidence, context clues and summarizing.

As a middle school teacher, I also have experience teaching study skills and assisting students with executive functioning. I am familiar with many studying strategies including note taking skills such as annotation, outlining and Cornell notes . In addition, I love helping students to create mnemonic devices, flashcards and study guides. There is no one size fits all approach to executive functioning and study skills so as a tutor I work with each student to understand their unique learning profile. I also work with students to create an organizational plan that will work for them.

As a regular education classroom teacher, I worked closely with special education staff to create an inclusive environment where all students succeed. I have worked in many co-taught classrooms. I have experience working with neurodivergent students and enjoy the challenge of thinking outside the box to accommodate individual needs. I am patient, nurturing and creative. I enjoy building positive relationships with the students I work with. I believe that caregivers play an integral role in student success so I work hard to establish a strong partnership.

I currently substitute part-time in the district I worked in and am excited to tutor as well.

Approved Subjects

Geography

Geography

I have 30 years of experience teaching 7th grade geography using the Massachusetts as well as National Geographic standards. My lessons have included both physical and cultural geography.
Literature

Literature

I taught ELA for several years of my 30 year middle school teaching career. I am familiar with many middle school and upper elementary school novels and have taught in both whole group instruction (class novels) as well as literature circles formats. I am comfortable working with students on all aspects of a novel.
Reading

Reading

I taught ELA for several years of my 30+ years of middle school education. Reading skills were an important part of the ELA curriculum. Using the Massachusetts ELA Frameworks and Standards, I created lessons focused on close reading skills including summarizing, inferencing, plot development, character development, setting and using context clues.
Social Studies

Social Studies

The middle school geography curriculum I taught for 30 years included the culture of various regions as well as the 5 themes of geography. Both focuses included broad aspects of social studies such as government, religion, physical geography and history. I have a broad background in the components of social studies through the 8th grade level.
Study Skills

Study Skills

As a retired middle school teacher with 30+ years of experience, I worked with many different student profiles to ensure that individual students had the best chance for success. I am familiar with many different study skills strategies as there is not a one size fits all approach that works.
Writing

Writing

As a middle school ELA teacher, I instructed and supported students with various types of writing formats and skills. I am very experienced in literary analysis, claims and narration as well as expository writing such as persuasive and informational. I support students in becoming astute evaluators of their own writing by helping them to identify where they have or have not met criteria. For example, in a claim response I might have them use different color of highlighter to identify where they have included a claim, evidence and supporting detail. This enables students to see strengths and weaknesses in their own writing with the goal of advancing confidence and independence.
