Hi!

I'm Steve, and I've spent over 15 years working with students and adults in areas ranging from test preparation to application essays, personal statements, and grant proposals. I received a PhD in archaeology in London, tutored the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT for well established firms including Kaplan and Summit, and I have worked with hundreds of high school, college, and graduate students in one-on-one and classroom environments, many of whom are now in top schools around the country and abroad.

At all levels, my approach to coaching is strategic, conceptual, and creative. Whether I am tutoring a specific subject or a standardized test, I find that effective teaching inspires students to develop their critical and creative thinking capacity, in addition to mastering fundamentals. This is true whether I'm working with a high schooler on the SAT math section, or an aspiring scholar seeking a postdoctoral placement abroad.

Coaching typically begins with an initial consultation (phone, skype or in-person) free of charge, where we discuss background, interests, and goals, and develop an outline for a targeted program. My approach is structured yet flexible since every student has a completely different style of learning, and we may discover different areas to target as we move along. For standardized test prep, I encourage each new student to take a diagnostic test to establish a baseline score, and to identify focus areas, as well as periodic practice tests as the program moves forward in order to measure progress. Specialized coaching in other areas, such as personal statements or proposal writing, will be more varied and project-specific.

If you or a family member (or friend!) is interested in tutoring/coaching/academic help, feel free to drop a line!

Excellent references available for all subjects.

I look forward to working with you!

Steve

I've helped students excel in the GMAT for over 15 years, including with some of the top firms in the US and abroad (including Kaplan). I focus on concept as well as strategy--both are equally important, and be careful of any tutor who tells you that all you need are "tips and tricks"! We'll also develop a study plan that will help keep you in line, so that you're ready for the test!
GRE

GRE

I've been coaching the GRE for years, including with some of the top firms in the US and abroad (including Kaplan). Students of mine have regularly gotten into top schools, and the skills I teach on the test are applicable far beyond the exam itself. I look forward to working with you!

Writing,

Writing

As an academic archaeologist, I've been helping students with their writing skills for years: at the grade school, college, and graduate level. I've written many peer-reviewed papers, articles, and proposals, and have a keen sense of how to write a solid research paper, university personal statement, or just a basic essay for a SAT or GRE exam. I help students understand processes behind creative and academic writing, and help them learn the rules (and how and when it's appropriate to break them!) Writing is an adventure, and I look forward to guiding your exploration.

Very knowledgeable and explains in an easy to understand manner

Steve helped me prepare for the quantitative section of the GMAT. He was extremely knowledgeable and got in touch before our meeting time to discuss content to ensure our time was used efficiently. He explained hard-to-grasp concepts in a way that made great sense and didn't mind repeating himself when he saw my facial expression say, "huh?" Will definitely be coming back to Steve for future needs. :)
