Hi, I'm Ahsen! I graduated summa cum laude from NC State with a Bachelor's in Computer Science and a minor in Math. I’ve always loved math, and for years I've looked for ways to share that enthusiasm with others. My tutoring experience started informally in high school, where I'd spend my free time working through problems with classmates who found the subject confusing. Seeing them finally connect the dots was immensely satisfying. That's what led me to continue tutoring in college, through NC State's Academic Success Center, where they trained us to work with different kinds of students in various situations. Over the next three years, from sophomore through senior year, I tutored Calculus I, II, and III in both one-on-one and group (3 to 6) settings, primarily for freshmen and sophomores.
My philosophy is that tutoring sessions should never feel like a lecture. Students choose what we work on, whether that's a specific problem set or a concept they're stuck on, and it's always okay to ask questions or get something wrong along the way. Rather than explicitly teaching a topic to a student or directly giving them the answers, I ask leading questions to help them figure it out themselves, since I've found that's the way learning actually sticks. A typical session starts with discussing what a student's been working on and what they want help with, moves into covering that material and working problems together, and ends with a quick recap and a goal to aim for before our next session.
I specialize in college-level math and love working with students who've decided they're "just not math people". In my experience, that isn't true. They just need the right environment and someone patient enough to help them find it. If that sounds like what you're looking for, feel free to reach out! I'd love to hear more about what you're working on and find a time to get started.
