As a Harvard Ph.D. Candidate with a B.S. from the College of William and Mary (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude), I know exactly how to help students with their STEM courses and standardized test preparation. I have a track record of successfully helping students with their courses and standardized exams. I most commonly help students prepare for all sections of their SAT, ACT, and ISEE/SSAT exams, as well as with STEM courses such as AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, genetics,...

I most commonly help students prepare for all sections of their SAT, ACT, and ISEE/SSAT exams, as well as with STEM courses such as AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, genetics, bioinformatics and Python.

One distinct advantage that I have over other tutors is that my knowledge is more than just theoretical. I have taught introductory and upper-level biology courses and served as the leader of the world-class 2017 William & Mary iGEM team (#2 in the world). I have won awards for mathematical and computational modeling and biology and have published several scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Further, because my acceptance into a Harvard Ph.D. program required success on many different high-stakes standardized tests, I know exactly how and what students need to study to succeed.

Many high-performing students run into real trouble on their standardized tests because they’ve falsely been led to believe that the standardized tests assess their knowledge of complicated concepts. In truth, standardized tests assess relatively simple ideas presented in a convoluted manner. As a tutor, I help students get into the mind of the test maker and see what test questions are really asking. This enables them to answer more quickly and correctly, improving their score. In general, students who prepare with me for around a month see improvements of about 15 percentile points, equivalent to approximately 4-5 points on the ACT and 150 points on the SAT.

I respond to inquiries quickly and have plenty of time available to tutor students. Please feel free to contact me if you want to set up a lesson or if you want to set up a video or phone meeting to discuss if I would be a good fit for your student.

Data Science

I'm a Harvard Ph.D. candidate and the perfect tutor for anyone struggling with data science, python, or machine learning or who wants to learn more about scientific and data analytic python packages such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Plotly, and sklearn. I’m a huge python fanatic who frequently uses scientific and data analytic packages for his work. I have a great deal of practical and theoretical experience using python for data science, frequently using python to format, clean and present data and make award-winning mathematical models. In the past, I've also used python to analyze data for quantitative finance firms. During my undergraduate coursework, I took multiple classes focusing on introductory python, python-based data structures, big data analysis, and machine learning using python, so I'm familiar with the material common to these courses. I've helped many students before and look forward to helping you too!

ACT English,

ACT English

As an expert ACT tutor with a B.S. in Applied Math and Biology, I have helped students from all backgrounds significantly improve their scores. Most students see average improvements to their ACT English section of 2-3 points within 8 weeks. As a tutor, my style is highly test focused, as students often struggle due to how the test asks questions rather than their lack of knowledge or ability. To that end, my test preparation course strongly emphasizes teaching students general and question-specific test-taking strategies and how to identify and exploit the test's design. In my tutoring sessions, I use authentic test materials and work with students to understand how to solve any individual question and identify what knowledge they need for problems of any given type. Depending on the student's needs, I also provide support with any missing concepts, timing, and psychological issues (e.g., test anxiety). I provide my own materials and typically expect students to do about 3 hours of work a week outside of our sessions. The ACT is too important to leave to chance, so don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions I can help with or to see how I can best help your student prepare.

Even though algebra 1 is the foundation of most upper-level mathematics, many students need better-quality teaching. Middle and high school students are forced to memorize arcane formulas to pass tests. College students are often taught abstractly and confusingly. My goal is to cut through all of that and help my students learn algebra in an uncomplicated way that still provides a deep understanding. As a Ph.D. candidate who regularly uses math to solve biological problems and holds a bachelor's in applied math, I can help students go beyond just passing their class, imbuing them with an understanding of why algebra is such an essential mathematical tool and setting them up for success in future courses, and standardized tests

ADHD

ADHD

As someone with ADHD myself, I can tell you that learning and succeeding with ADHD is not always easy. I provide tutoring and life-coaching help for teens and young adults who have ADHD. Students with ADHD need specialized structure in their lives (accountability, immediate short term rewards), as well as systems put in place (by themselves and/or parents) to enable their success. As someone who has personally struggled with ADHD, I have strong working knowledge of the types of actions and systems that students can use to try to better organize themselves for success. There is no magic bullet solution and every student is unique, so I try to place a high value on experimentation and providing students resources to figure out what works best for them.

College Counseling,

College Counseling

Everyone knows how arcane and confusing the college admissions process is, but fewer know that this confusion is created on purpose. I help demystify that process and guide students and their parents through choosing, preparing for, and applying to university. I'm highly knowledgeable and have worked with students who have ended up attending their dream schools such as Harvard, MIT, UW-Madison, NYU, and more. The admissions process is constantly changing (test-optional, new supplements, etc.), but I keep on top of the latest news and information to ensure you have the best chance at the right college.

ISEE,

ISEE

Getting your child ready for the ISEE is a confusing and disorienting experience for many parents. What material should you use to prepare, and for how long should your child practice? How can they identify what areas their child can most improve in? I can help. As an expert ISEE tutor with a B.S. in Applied Math and Biology, I aim to improve students' scores by any means. My tutoring includes concept reviews, test-taking strategies, and targeted practice drills. I know that each section of the ISEE (Verbal, Reading, Quantitative, and Mathematics Achievement) has unique challenges, so I build a custom plan for each section for every student. Another challenge for the ISEE, in particular, is that relatively little preparation material is available. Luckily, I own and know the strengths and weaknesses of all the major ISEE prep books and have additional high-quality custom-made preparation material. The ISEE is too important to leave to chance, so don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions I can help with or to see how I can best help your student with their ISEE prep.

Phenomenal Tutor, Expert in a Variety of Topics

Ethan helped me with computer science algorithms. Ethan was able to help me with an assignment involving an advanced algorithm that he hadn't had much experience with before. He was able to quickly understand the problem, the solution, and quickly and effectively teach me. Leaving me with a deeper understanding and the confidence to implement the algorithm in future contexts.
