As a Harvard PhD Student with a B.S from the College of William and Mary (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude), I know exactly how to help students with their STEM courses and standardized test preparation. I have a track record of successfully helping students with their courses and their standardized exams. I most commonly help students with prepare for their SAT, ACT, ISEE/SSAT exams as well as with STEM courses such as: AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry and Python.

One distinct advantage that I have over other tutors is that my knowledge is not just theoretical. I have taught introductory and upper level biology courses, and served as the leader of the world class 2017 William & Mary iGEM team (#2 in the world). I have won awards for mathematical and computational modeling as well as for biology, and have published several scientific papers in peer reviewed journals. Further, because my acceptance into a Harvard PhD program required success on many different high stakes standardized tests, I know exactly how and what students need to study to succeed.

Many high performing students run into real trouble on their standardized tests because they’ve falsely been lead to believe that the standardized tests assess their knowledge of complicated concepts. In truth, standardized tests assess simple concepts which are presented in a convoluted manner. As a tutor, I help students get into the mind of the test maker and see what test questions are really asking. This enables them to answer more quickly and correctly, improving their score. In general students who prepare with me for around a month see improvements of around 15 percentile points, which is equivalent to around 4-5 points on the ACT and 150 points on the SAT.

I'm very quick to respond to inquiries and have plenty of time available to tutor students. Please feel free to contact me if you want to set up a lesson or if you want to set up a video or phone meeting to discuss if I would be a good fit for your student.

Python

I'm a huge python fan who frequently uses scientific and data analytic packages (scipy, numpy, pandas) for his work. In the course of my undergraduate coursework I took multiple classes focusing on introductory python and python based data structures as well as classes on big data analysis using python. I frequently use python to format, clean and present data, as well as to make mathematical models. I'm the perfect tutor for anyone who is struggling with introductory python or who wants to learn more about scientific and data analytic python packages such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib and sklearn.

Taking standardized tests can be one of the most stressful and crucial parts of the high school experience. As an expert test prep tutor with a B.S. in Applied Math and Biology, I have helped students from a variety of backgrounds greatly improve their scores in all sections of the ACT. Depending on the student, my tutoring may consist of concept review, test taking strategy, practice drills and more. My experiences tutoring over the last 4 years have lead me to strongly advocate that students prepare using questions from actual ACT exams, including the English section, as it enables them to become familiar with the way questions are asked on the actual exam.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Despite the fact that algebra 1 is the foundation of most upper level mathematics, many students often have trouble due to poor quality teaching. Middle and high school students are forced to memorize arcane formulas simply to pass tests, and college students are often taught in an abstract and confusing manner. My goal is to cut through all of that and to help my students learn algebra in an uncomplicated way that still provides a deep understanding. As a PhD student who regularly uses math to solve biological problems, and as someone who holds a bachelors in applied math, I'm able to help students go beyond just passing their class, imbuing them with an understanding of why algebra is so useful as a mathematical tool.

Biology,

Biology

I graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.94) with a degree in applied biology from William & Mary. Along the way I took extensive coursework in molecular biology as well as chemistry and mathematics. More importantly, I have performed and am the first author of original research which has been published in peer reviewed journals (Journal of Biological Engineering, PLOS One). Moreover, I have won multiple international prizes for my research as the student leader of William & Mary's Bioengineering Lab (iGEM Best Modeling, Best Measurement, Grand Prize Runner Up, Gold Medal X3, and more). Currently I am pursuing my PhD in systems biology at Harvard, with a focus on synthetic biology.
Calculus,

Calculus

In the course of obtaining my B.S. in applied mathematics and biology I took and (and earned an A in) Calculus I - III as well as differential equations and partial differential equations. Additionally, several of my biology research projects have used applications of calculus, and I have taken a great number of additional classes which utilize calculus beyond the main calculus track.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

Many students at both the high school and undergraduate level struggle with chemistry. I'm an expert tutor who can help you succeed in introductory, general and organic chemistry. During my undergraduate degree at William and Mary, I took and received an A grade in General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II and the associated labs. Additionally, as a freshman, I performed research in a NSF funded chemistry laboratory. Currently, I perform research as a biologist and biochemist and work with and use chemistry everyday. I am the perfect tutor for anyone struggling with chemistry, and am especially valuable for students whose interests are in biology or medicine. I have a wide base of knowledge and strive to help my students go beyond rote memorization, leaving them with a broader and deeper understanding of chemistry.

Special Needs

ADHD

ADHD

As someone with ADHD myself, I can tell you that learning and succeeding with ADHD is not always easy. I provide tutoring and life-coaching help for teens and young adults who have ADHD. Students with ADHD need specialized structure in their lives (accountability, immediate short term rewards), as well as systems put in place (by themselves and/or parents) to enable their success. As someone who has personally struggled with ADHD, I have strong working knowledge of the types of actions and systems that students can use to try to better organize themselves for success. There is no magic bullet solution and every student is unique, so I try to place a high value on experimentation and providing students resources to figure out what works best for them.

the cheapest tutor on Wyzant

Wait, what? This guy is expensive! But, as with so many other things, you get what you pay for. Ethan’s super smart and lightning quick getting you up to speed. You’ll need half the time. It works out in the end.

Constructive, Productive & Patient

Ethan is an exceptional tutor and mentor. His ability to break down problems into digestible pieces helped my understanding of machine learning models and the statistics behind the models. I will continue to receive help and advice from Ethan!

Knowledgeable and very helpful.

Ethan had a first meeting with my son and discussed the goals for taking the SAT, the format of the test and went over how to prepare for each sections. My son like him very much. We will keep seeing Ethan in efforts to better prepare my son for taking the SAT.

Sharp and Good communicator.

Some quick data visualizations in python involving random trajectories and plotting time series data. Was very helpful. Even checked up on me to make sure I had some reference material.
