Hello, students!

I currently hold a master's degree in Physics from Michigan State University and have over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I am currently working as a high school Physics teacher, preparing students in AP and A-level Physics classes for college admission.

I have worked in a variety of technical environments, including performing Physics computational work at a national laboratory (National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory), and writing machine learning patents for some of the best AI companies in the world while at the law firm Fish & Richardson.

I received my Bachelor's from Trinity College in Physics, Classics, and Mathematics, all with honors. I was near the top of my class and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. I was an active member of multiple tutoring services on campus during all four of my years there, and traveled to Thailand to teach English before I entered into graduate school, where I tutored and taught college level Physics laboratory classes. I have always loved learning a plethora of subjects, academic and otherwise, and bring my full weight to bear in everything I pursue.

My approach has never been to give students answers, or to supply simple one-time techniques. I always aim to foster confidence and build understanding from the ground level up. I instill a mode of thought that facilitates problem solving and knowledge assimilation. If my initial explanations are inadequate, I will happily switch gears until my approach suits you, the learner.

I also offer free email support between tutoring sessions. Whether you need more material or have a question, you are welcome to email me.

Thank you for considering my services and enjoy!

John B.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I hold degrees with honors in Physics and Mathematics from Trinity College. I have taken an extensive college course load in these two subjects, many using techniques ranging from basic algebra up through advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I have more than five years of tutoring and teaching experience, largely in the fields of Mathematics and Physics. I am willing and able to tutor any student in Algebra 1!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I hold degrees with honors in Physics and Mathematics from Trinity College. I have taken an extensive college course load in these two subjects, many using techniques ranging from basic algebra up through advanced calculus and linear algebra. I have over five years of tutoring and teaching experience, largely in the fields of Mathematics and Physics, with students ranging from middle school to college in age. I am willing and able to tutor any student in Algebra 2!
C++

C++

I am currently in the research stage of a Computational Physics PhD, having completed my Master's of Physics in May of 2017. I have been tutoring since my first year of my undergraduate studies in 2008, and I have 2+ years of coding experience with C++ in a research environment.
Calculus

Calculus

I hold a Master's degree in Physics from MSU, where I performed graduate research in computational (read: machine learning and programming) statistical Physics. I earned degrees with honors in Mathematics and Physics from Trinity College, where I took Calculus intensive classes in both majors, from basic Calculus I straight through to application in Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics. I have taught and tutored extensively for more than ten years. Very often, this tutoring involved helping students understand Calculus both in its pure form and through application in Physics. I am ready and willing to tutor any calculus student!
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I am currently a PhD Candidate in Nuclear Physics, and I graduated with honors in Physics, Classics, and Mathematics from Trinity College. During this time I took Differential Equations and received the letter grade of "A+." I have five years of tutoring and teaching experience, especially in Physics and Mathematics.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have previously been an ESL teacher in Thailand, and have informally helped many foreign graduate students in my time at MSU.
Grammar

Grammar

I hold a degree with honors in Classics from Trinity College. During this time, I intensively learned Latin and Ancient Greek and took several classes in both Norwegian and German. I have sense dabbled in Thai and Russian. Though I am by no means a grammarian in any official capacity, language and grammar have been a passion of mine for many years. I am willing and able to help any student with grammar!
GRE

GRE

I performed well on my own GRE, got into an excellent graduate Physics program, and can help you understand the material and prepare strategies for success.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I am a PhD Candidate in Physics, and I graduated with honors in Physics and Mathematics from Trinity College. During this time I took Linear Algebra and received the letter grade of "A." I also took many upper-level, proof-based mathematics courses to supplement my understanding. Finally, I have ten years of tutoring and teaching experience, especially in Physics and Mathematics.
Physics

Physics

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Physics from MSU and am employeed at the NSCL on campus. I earned degrees with honors in Mathematics and Physics from Trinity College, where I was an active member of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, the Physics national honors society. I have tutored Physics for over eight years and conducted Physics demonstrations for local middle school students. I have performed first-hand research and have a peer-reviewed publication. I am willing and able to tutor any student in Physics!
Precalculus

Precalculus

I am a PhD Candidate in Physics, and I hold degrees with honors in Mathematics and Physics from Trinity College. I have taken an extensive course load in these two subjects, many of them intensively using Calculus and all requisite material. I have also used this level of Mathematics while performing research in Physics. Beyond this, I have also tutored and taught for over five ten, largely focusing in Physics and Mathematics courses which use this material. I am willing and able to tutor any student in Precalculus!
Writing

Writing

Throughout my academic career I have written in many fields, from essays in the Classics and technical papers in the sciences, to expository writing in my spare time. As a result of my diverse background, I am prepared to help with anything from the typical essay to lab reports to blogs. Whether it be help with content, style, grammar, or persuasive writing I am your man.

Reviews

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

After only my first lesson, I felt that John really helped me understand the math that I was confused on, along with showing me tricks to help me reduce mistakes and quicken the processes within the problems we worked on. On top of that, when I was confused or struggling with a problem he was very patient in helping me work through it. I will definitely be taking more lessons from him in the future.

Great review of College Algebra in Preparation for final

John did a great job and was easy to understand. We reviewed old tests and practice tests in preparation for a final exam. Hopefully he can help me with my next class.
