Hello. My name is Michelle. I have extensive experience translating articles and documents in both directions, from Japanese to English and from English to Japanese. In addition, I have over 15 years of one-on-one tutoring experience. My goal is to create a comfortable, bilingual learning environment tailored to each student’s needs. I believe students learn more quickly and develop a deeper understanding when they genuinely enjoy the learning process and feel a personal connection to a foreign language. For this reason, I strive to keep lessons engaging by offering interactive activities that encourage active participation.

Born and raised in sunny Southern California, I grew up immersed in both American and Japanese cultures. I attended a Japanese after-school program (Mon - Fri) from Kindergarten to High school. I have been speaking in both Japanese and English at home. These experiences allowed me to naturally blend the two cultures into my own worldview. As I entered adulthood, I moved to Tokyo, where I worked as a translator and interpreter. After several years in Tokyo, I relocated to New York City and spent ten years working as a translator and web/graphic designer while also tutoring English. I later moved to the Bay Area, California, where I continued focusing on graphic design and created educational activity worksheets for children.

Currently, I am in Boston and writing articles in Japanese and translating articles and documents. I strive to live a life that is both unique and simple, creatively blending English and Japanese in everything I do. My lessons range from Business Japanese to Children’s Japanese, and I enjoy adapting my teaching style to suit learners of all ages and backgrounds.

I have over 20 years of experience in translation and tutoring. I grew up in a bilingual environment where I learned Japanese and English, as well as the cultural differences between the Japan and United States. From kindergarten through high school, I attended an after-school Japanese program five days a week while speaking in both Japanese and English at home. This experience has enabled me to develop a deeper understanding of both languages and the cultural differences through school and home, which has positively impacted my work. After graduating from college, I relocated to Tokyo, where I worked as a translator and interpreter in a professional business setting. After several years in Japan, I moved to New York City, where I studied graphic design. I spent 9 years working as a web and graphic designer and translator, freelancing for small companies. I later relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I focused on graphic design and translations for small businesses. Currently, I am based in Boston and have written +48 articles in Japanese for English learners, translated +144 articles and +432 professional documents (excluding email and presentation translations) in both directions (Japanese–English and English–Japanese), and provide English tutoring to Japanese students. When I translate a wide range of materials, I aim to translate the nuances of the documents accurately and clearly, with cultural sensitivity. My work values for translations also align with my tutoring approach, which focuses on creating a supportive learning environment in a bilingual setting. I always ensure that I tailor the lessons to each student’s goals and learning style. I believe that students learn more effectively when they enjoy learning and feel a meaningful connection to the language. I have really enjoyed working for 20 years as a translator and interpreter across diverse industries. (And honestly, I have learned new things about languages and cultures throughout my career!) Also, meeting new students and tutoring st
