Hello! I'm Zeb, a tutor with more than 5 years of experience tutoring English, as well as other college-level humanities disciplines such as Sociology and Political Science. I obtained my Master's degree in English with honors from Boston University, and have been working independently as a tutor since. I love helping students realize their full potential and bring their grades up, and my students have consistently shown a marked improvement in their reading skills and academic levels.
The reason I love tutoring so much is simple: I believe every student can learn and improve, and that it is my duty as an educator to help them get there. I recognize that each student has different learning styles and needs, and I tailor my lessons to reflect those individual differences. For example, if you are a visual learner, we will have plenty of videos and Kahoot quizzes. I am also a big believer in having a strong basic foundation--we will go over the fundamentals again and again, and slowly build onto more complex concepts using it as a springboard.
Through my career, I have worked with diverse ages of students (8-18), many of whom come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. My priority is to keep learning fun and relevant to students' daily lives. My support goals for younger students are to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary, develop paragraph writing, build confidence in discussing text, and expose them to literary devices such as metaphors and themes. I lean toward realistic fiction and accessible narratives like Wonder or Front Desk (or even visual novels such as El Deafo by Cece Bell).
For older students, my goals are a little more advanced: analyzing theme and character, learning evidence-based writing, refining grammar and sentence variety, and preparing them for high school style assignments. I use more layered texts like Long Way Down or The Outsiders to encourage discussion and evidence-based writing. Each session balances reading strategy work with structured writing practice.
