Hello! My name is Sophia, and I am currently a Social Work PhD student at Boston College. I am also a licensed special education teacher. Prior to doctoral studies, I received a masters degree from the University of Chicago. Additionally, I was a high school special education teaching in Chicago for many years where I specialized in teaching reading and writing courses for students with and without special needs. My students consistently had some of the highest reading growth across the network. I also specialize in executive functioning interventions for students. Considering my diverse experience, I offer tutoring in many areas. My tutoring services target students with and without special needs in humanities subjects, such as reading, writing, and social studies. In addition, I offer tutoring services for the following test prep courses: SAT, ACT, PSAT, GED, SSAT, and ISEE.
I look forward to helping you reach out goals academically and grow as a student.

About me: I am originally from Princeton, NJ, but moved to Michigan for college where I attended the University of Michigan (Go Blue!), where I studied Political Science and Psychology. After graduation, I moved to Chicago to become a Special Education teacher. While teaching for my first two years, I pursued my master's in Special Education. As a Special Education teacher, I have proven success in using accommodations to best support my students' needs as well as individualizing instruction, which makes me uniquely qualified as a tutor.

I also enjoy supporting adult learners in college or graduate-level courses or adults who need support in other areas, such as improving confidence in their reading and/or writing abilities.

I look forward to connecting with you and your families! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Tutor who helps with focus, organizational skills & achievable goals

My daughter was behind on her independent study program, and we saw immediate progress as Sophia helped her get organized and focused. She is helping with executive function skills such as time blocking, overcoming procrastination, and more. My daughter describes Sophia as patient and supportive, and the two have established a good rapport /working relationship. Sophia is very professional and stays in touch to provide a good understanding of my daughter's progress. Their work together helps alleviate nagging from me. Most importantly, Sophia has helped boost my daughter's confidence about completing the work!

Knowledgeable and incredibly kind Tutor

Sophia really connected with my son right away. She is kind, patient, and knowledgeable on techniques that will help my son, whom is learning disabled. She utilizes the entire session to enhancing his reading comprehension and address areas he struggles with. I have never seen my son enjoy working with someone as much as he does with Sophia. She even makes him laugh and seems to really care about his personal well-being too. It’s so important for his social emotional skills to have a tutor that will make him feel comfortable. I’m excited to continue seeing his progress as she works with him.

Outstanding and Amazing Experience

Going back to school is/was extremely emotional challenging for me. Starting over as an adult learner is 1 of my many obstacles. 2nd feeling in adequate. Sophia E. is outstanding teacher but I needed more. She matches my level of energy and provides a level of comfort and make me feel safe when I feel so uncomfortable starting over.

Patient and Kind

Sophia is currently working with my younger brother, who is autistic and dyslexic. He’s had a hard time over the years with his general education and is now 20 years old without a HS Degree. Sophia was so understanding of his situation and eager to help him. My brother has taken to her really well and likes working with her so far. I’m confident she will help him reach his goals to obtain his GED. We really like Sophia and highly recommend her!
