I have been teaching and tutoring since I graduated from Brown University in 2013 and realized I could share my love of languages, and get paid to do it! Most recently, in December 2023, I completed an MA in Classics with a focus on teaching Latin. I have been teaching and tutoring since I graduated from Brown University in 2013 and realized I could share my love of languages, and get paid to do it! Most recently, in December 2023, I completed an MA in Classics with a focus on teaching Latin. My course of study exposed me to additional pedagogical methods, issues in education, and a wide selection of Latin literature.

In 2014, I completed a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and since then I've taught ESL in Boston, Massachusetts and Moscow, Russia. In addition, I served as interim Latin teacher at a New Hampshire boarding school from 2014-2015.

As I've tutored various subjects and used the communicative method to teach languages over the years, I've seen again and again the success and confidence that results from eliciting responses from students and patiently working through material with them. I've been exposed to many different teaching methods and styles during my time studying various languages, living and dead, both in formal classroom situations and on my own, and I've tried to take the best of what I've seen and incorporate it into my own methods and recommendations for how students should study.

Two things that have always come naturally to me are languages and standardized tests, and while I have a passion for the former, I also enjoy approaching test problems as puzzles and find satisfaction in sharing the techniques that helped me succeed with others.

Approved Subjects

Chinese

Chinese

I studied Chinese for one year in high school, two years in college, and also spent a summer in Beijing studying Chinese intensively. I've had many different instructors and used different textbooks, so I've seen material presented in different ways. I know what worked for me, what worked for my classmates and what didn't really work for anyone. I have also done some tutoring in Chinese online.
Classics

Classics

I majored in Classics at Brown University. In addition to classes in Latin and Ancient Greek, I studied Greek History, Greek Mythology, and more.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In 2014, I completed a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I received 120 hours of classroom instruction in teaching English, created and implemented 6 lesson plans using my own material, observed colleagues teaching and participated in feedback sessions. Since then I have taught in-person and online group and 1-on-1 ESL lessons. In my most recent ESL position in Moscow, Russia, I taught adults, teenagers and young learners with levels ranging from beginner to advanced, both in groups and 1-on-1.
German

German

I studied German for four years in high school and also in college. I scored a 5 on the German AP and in the 99th percentile on the AATG National German Exam. I have spent around two months total in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Latin

Latin

I have been tutoring Latin on various platforms since 2013, and recently completed an MA in Classics with a focus on teaching Latin; I am in the final stages of earning my initial license to teach Latin in Massachusetts public schools. I have experience using both traditional and innovative methodology, including conversational and other forms of active Latin. I have successfully tutored students as young as 5. In 2014-2015, I served as an interim Latin teacher at a boarding school in New Hampshire, where I taught all four levels of Latin offered, including AP. Authors I taught included Vergil, Caesar, and Suetonius. I studied Latin for four years in high school, with an 800 on the Latin SAT II, and also in college. I've studied the Aeneid and Petronius in depth, plus some Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Cicero, and various other classical and medieval Latin authors. I participate in conversational Latin groups with other teachers, and have spent several weeks in Latin immersion experiences.
Russian

Russian

I spent the last year teaching ESL in Russia, where I got a chance to improve both my teaching methods and my knowledge of Russian. Before that I studied Russian for two years in college, and was consistently near the top of my class. I had three different instructors, so I've seen material presented in different ways. I know what worked for me, what worked for my classmates and what didn't really work for anyone.
