Hi! I’m Shamar, a Harvard Graduate School of Education Ed.M. graduate and current academic advisor in graduate education. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with students ranging from middle school through graduate school, supporting them academically while helping them build the confidence and skills to navigate school independently. I’ve provided one-on-one and group mentorship to hundreds of students through academic mentoring, college-access programs, youth development, and higher education. My experience includes academic writing, research, statistics, college applications, study strategies, time management, organization, and academic and career planning.
Much of my work has focused on helping students develop skills that are not always explicitly taught in the classroom. I’ve mentored Posse Scholars through the transition to college, supported high school students with academic and career goals, and worked with youth through community-based research and leadership programs. I’ve also mentored middle school students through basketball, where I emphasized teamwork, confidence, accountability, and personal growth alongside athletic development.
My tutoring approach comes from these years of mentorship. I want to build a relationship where students feel comfortable being honest about what they are struggling with and why. I don’t believe tutoring should be one-sided or simply about giving students the answers. Instead, I work collaboratively with students to understand their goals, identify what is getting in their way, and develop strategies that work for them. Whether you need help with an assignment, want to strengthen your writing or study habits, are preparing a college application, or need help getting organized and staying on track, I’ll meet you where you are. My goal is for you to leave each session with meaningful progress and greater confidence in your ability to tackle the next challenge independently.
