About Liz

Good written and verbal skills are critical for success in school and work, and yet so many people - young and old - have a fear of both. I help students build their skills AND their confidence. When they reach their "aha" moment, it's empowering for them and exciting for me to see their growth. I've taught many age and ability levels, and I'm extremely adaptable to learning styles. Helping students get organized and manage their studies efficiently is something we work on regardless of the subject matter; good study skills and time management serves my students well.

I've been an adjunct faculty member at Wheelock College Graduate School of Social Work since 2013 and at Urban College of Boston since 2014. I've taught social policy and leadership and administration at the graduate level, and multiple levels of English Writing, Public Speaking, Psychology and Health & Nutrition at the undergraduate level. For a majority of my students, English is not their first language, so these courses were potentially intimidating for them. Building their confidence was key to helping them be successful.

I assign homework and provide progress reports, and clarify goals and expectations at our first session. It's important that we establish a starting point and create a road map that will take us to the desired end point.

My schedule is generally flexible for tutoring. I am available to meet in person, and I will provide extra sessions online. My rate is $75 per hour in person, $45 per hour online, and $35 per hour offline to review and critique homework assignments, college essays, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Eight years ago I launched a communications and public speaking workshop at my agency to prepare our participants to share their stories publicly. During this time we have trained over 150 participants to equip them with the skills to address audiences of as few as 5 up to as many as 500. I have also served as the official agency spokesperson of my current and previous agency. Three years ago I joined Urban College of Boston as an adjunct faculty member and I've been teaching public speaking at the college level. My public speaking experience has included providing interviews with media, testifying at legislative hearings, serving as keynote speaker and as event MC. I have participated in Toastmaster's forums, I have been a speechwriter in the public and private sector. My method of teaching public speaking is to help students overcome their nervousness through confidence-building and relaxation techniques, and to help them develop content based on a very organized and concrete approach to the subject matter. I have taught these classes to adults who were not necessarily native English speakers, and I have been extremely successful in building their sense of mastery and ability to communicate their message.
