I am a summa cum laude graduate of Duke University, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, and a current Resident Physician in Internal Medicine at Columbia University. My experiences in pursuing a career in medicine have been among the most meaningful in my life! I joined Wyzant to work with students to support them in achieving their aspirations in medicine -- because I think it's the most fulfilling career path in the world :)

I specifically work with students on preparation for USMLE Step exams as well as development of application, essay writing, and interviewing skills for medical school and residency. My expertise in these spaces stems from my background as a professional tutor at Med School Insiders. I also serve as a mock interviewer at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. I have worked with countless students, including medical school re-applicants and individuals who failed Step on their first pass, guiding them on their way to find success! The success of my students stands for itself - with many having achieved admission at all ranges of programs - such as Johns Hopkins, UCSD, BS / MD programs, and DO institutions. I am excited to bring my passion for education to help students along their journey. Please reach out to me for more information--I am eager to work with you!

Career Development

Career Development

My goal is to support students in college, medical school, and residency as they pursue careers towards a life in medicine. My expertise in this area stems from my personal journey, having completed my undergraduate at Duke University, a research fellowship at the NIH, and a global health fellowship in Thailand focused on HIV disparities. These collective experiences have helped me find my place as a graduate of Harvard Medical School and a current Resident Physician in Internal Medicine at Columbia University. I am eager to work with students to craft successful personal statements for medical school and ERAS applications, as well as to strategize about pursuing meaningful extracurricular and research opportunities on the path towards a career in medicine, and finally to build the skills to be an effective interviewee for competitive seats in medical school, residency, and fellowship. Of note, I have extensive experience in working with re-applicants to help them secure their positions in medical school. I am excited to support you in any way I can in finding your pathway in medicine.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As a graduate of Harvard Medical School and Resident Physician at Columbia University, I have extensive experience in preparing for medical school applications, both from my personal journey as well as from mentoring countless students interested in careers in medicine. My strengths are in offering guidance on how to effectively pursue premed coursework and extracurriculars, in supporting the development of powerful personal statements for medical school applications, and finally in preparing for admissions interviews, including both standard and Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) formats. I also serve as a mock interviewer for students at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Furthermore, having completed a year of global health research as well as a year of research at the NIH, I am well-equipped to support applicants as they consider opportunities for enriching gap years along the journey to medical school. Thus far, many of my students, including re-applicants and IMGs, have achieved their dreams in achieving admission to medical school / residency (including at top institutions such as Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, UCSD, UIC, as well as highly competitive BS-MD programs and residencies including dermatology)!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I am a graduate of Harvard Medical School and a current Internal Medicine Resident at Columbia hospital. Over the last 4+ years, I have guided 100+ students through the application writing process for medical school and residency. I specialize in supporting students to find power in their narratives and to bring that energy to paper, empowering them to overcome the daunting nature of the personal statement. My students have found success in many different pathways, from achieving admission at some of the nation's top institutions including Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic as well as incredibly competitive residency programs such as dermatology.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

As a graduate of Harvard Medical School as an Internal Medicine Resident at Columbia, I am passionate about guiding students to achieve their greatest aspirations as they apply to medical school and residency. I serve as a peer to peer interview at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, wherein I have honed my skills in building comfort and proficiency with interviewing. I have guided students through both standard and multiple mini interview (MMI) formats. I help students build confidence in themselves, find their voice, and draw power as they passionately tell their narrative through their interviews. The success of my students speaks for itself - with many having achieved admission at top institutions including Johns Hopkins, the Cleveland Clinic, and highly selective residencies including in dermatology.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

Drawing from my background as a graduate of Harvard Medical School and as an Internal Medicine Resident at Columbia University, I have had extensive opportunities to guide students in college, medical school, and residency as they prepare their personal statement, activities section, and resume for the AMCAS and ERAS applications. I have worked professionally at Medical School Insiders to guide applicants in a systematic fashion to bring out their voice through their writing and help them land their top choices for their medical training. Collectively, I have guided over 100+ students in this process, helping them achieve admission at top institutions including Johns Hopkins, the Cleveland Clinic, UCSD, as well as competitive positions in dermatology and anesthesiology residency.
USMLE

USMLE

I scored 270 on USMLE Step 1, 259 on Step 2, and 256 on Step 3. I specialize in working with students to develop systematic problem-solving skills towards tackling USMLE questions, helping them break down high-yield pathophysiology in simple and digestible ways. I have experience in using multiple study tools (UWorld, AMBOSS, Anki, SketchyMicro, Boards and Beyond, Pathoma, etc.) in crafting successful study plans for USMLE exams. As a graduate of Harvard Medical School, I work with students to translate USMLE concepts to clinically relevant pearls for success on the boards -- and the wards. I offer both systems-based content review for those seeking to brush up fundamentals, as well as application-oriented problem solving sessions designed to boost your test-taking aptitude. Thus far, I have had success in helping many students, including those retaking the exam, achieve their dream scores on both Step and COMLEX! Among my recent students, I worked with one individual who had failed Step 3 on two attempts, who then went on to convincingly pass the exam and start his career as a boards-certified attending. Two of my other recent students scored > 260 on Step 2, cementing their respective paths to careers in dermatology and anesthesiology! I am eager to hear your story and help you to find a path to success!

Very helpful for residency prep

I had 5 x 1-hour sessions with Rifat during residency interview season. He helped me organize my thoughts in preparation for interviews. Rifat is so humble, personable, kind, confident, patient, and competent. He helped me to eloquently convey my narrative, and gave helpful feedback, not only on the content of my answers, but also on the delivery. I felt much more equipped going into the stress of interviews. With his help and confidence in me, I matched into dermatology residency! I will be recommending Rifat to anyone who wants help with interview practice, or strategies for application season in general!

Very helpful. Highly recommend!

Rifat helped me a lot with my medical school personal statement. He is highly knowledgeable about medical school admissions process and what a personal statement should entail. I was so lost and did not know how to piece my stories together. But by the end of our session, I had a much better understanding of what was expected from a good personal statement. He took the time to thoroughly read my draft and resume and had very helpful suggestions for my essay. Highly recommend!
