Hi, I am a tutor with a decade of experience. My students have gone on to Yale and Brown. I have a reading program running year-round! I specialize primarily in reading comprehension, essay writing, and test preparation. I studied both English and Psychology, including: childhood development, and developmental disabilities. I am further trained in: executive functioning; memory recall using the keyword approach; and organizational skills, making me a good fit for students with ADHD and special needs. I have been a TOEFL teacher for 3 years.

I work with all ages, from elementary students to adults. I assist with homework, essays, coursework comprehension, projects, and research papers. I proofread and mentor for college application essays, and supplemental questions. I work with students to apply for scholarships, workshops, internships, and honor societies. I also am skilled in test preparation, especially for the SAT, ACT, AP Language & Arts, AP Literature, AP World History, APUSH (U.S. History), AP Psychology, and other exams.

I pride myself on my patience and kindness. My style involves both keeping students engaged, and ensuring their skills are developing in a timely manner. Using easy-to-understand explanations, I can describe high-brow reading passages with ease, or deconstruct essay questions. Students that I work with find themselves not only understanding important information, but enjoying the process of learning it. I ensure that they are able to explain the content back to me, preparing them both for tests and for practical application.

American History

Great tutor!

It’s been just 2 sessions and I can see my kids are getting more engaged in summer reading, and looking forward to more sessions with Darby. She has a very organized game plan covering vocabulary, writing, logical reasoning..

Divya, 37 lessons with Darby Jo
Tutor responded:

Hi Divya! Your kids are brilliant, and I have had a wonderful time transitioning them first to novels, and now into the school year. Seeing them writing essays on The Hobbit, and creative pieces on legalistic debates, makes every lesson fresh and engaging for me. I have loved being able to incorporate their vocabulary skills into their writing pieces, and then deriving analyses by demonstrating first in understanding their passage, and then by having them work through their comprehension of their consumed material. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I am very honored to be your students' writing tutor, and that you have stayed for the school year.

Good understanding of the student's situation.

Worked with my 16yo son for executive functioning skills ... only 1 session so far, but she seemed to have a good understanding of how my son works. Look forward to more sessions with Darby!

JAnn, 3 lessons with Darby Jo

Hi Shameka, Thank you so much for your incredibly sweet review. Your son has been so much fun to work with, I love how creative our sessions are, and how much he wants to learn. And I love how much I learn, too!

Knowledgeable enough

I had several tutors before, online or in person for more than 5 years. As an international student, I can say Darby is knowledgeable enough and best tutor that polished my papers and make it as clear as crystal. She would respond each email, each question, each concern. She precisely went through each sentence to make sure that all questions have been answered in a proper way. Also, she makes sure that you’ll not waist a single minute for tutorial sessions. Absolutely, l’ll recommend all my friends to contact her for any assignments. Best of luck to her!

Khaled, 6 lessons with Darby Jo

Súper Great Teacher/tutor?

She helped me understand my essay, reach my word count and ease my stress! She was very insightful and helped develop vocabulary and boost morale. Made me feel confident in my writing while also helping me elaborate and put my thoughts onto paper

Nicole, 3 lessons with Darby Jo
Tutor responded:

Hi Nicole! Thank you for being my first review on Wyzant, all those years ago. I remember the essay we worked on, and how diligently you tackled it's requirements. I was more than happy to help edit your vocabulary, just to develop it further and to ensure that your thoughts were conveyed in the way you saw them in your mind. That feeling of success at the end is the reason I do this work. Thank you again!
