Hey there! I'm Kyle, a Caltech biology grad with work experience in aerospace engineering, particle physics, synthetic biology, track & field coaching—even lighting design for live concerts! I got my start by teaching guitar in middle school, but I've spent the past 6 years working as a tutor, college counselor, and essay reviewer for private services in both California and Massachusetts. Briefly, my tutoring has included: mathematics (elementary through Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus); English (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary); preparation for the ISEE, SCAT, ACT, SAT, and APs; personalized courses to improve creative writing and work on DBQ-style questions; and general homework help for students across the spectrum of backgrounds and neurotypes. I’ve worked with students as young as 5 and as old as 22, from across the L.A. area to universities in the Midwest, even all the way to Beijing!

I pride myself on being able to adapt to a variety of learning styles, personalities, and needs, and I'm always looking to go the extra mile to make sure my students get the grades they're aiming for. My Caltech education was fortunately both broad and deep, and both my work and life experiences have allowed me to meet people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out—I look forward to helping you get to where you want to be!

ACT English

ACT English

My own ACT score was 35 (34 on this subsection), and I have 6+ years of experience working with high schoolers on English and test prep, focusing on subject review, test-taking strategies, and anxiety reduction through repetition. I utilize a large bank of practice questions and exams for prior years to simulate the test-taking environment as closely as possible. In my experience, tests are an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge a student already knows—the biggest obstacles to overcome are time pressure and format familiarity, and my goal is to acclimate students to that in order to let their skills shine through.

ADHD

ADHD

My experiences working with students with diverse neurotypes—ADHD to dyslexia and ASD—have both helped me empathize and focus on scheduling, prioritization, and task completion. I've taken coursework to understand the underlying psychology of learning and motivation to understand effective learning strategies, organizational skills, and methods of anxiety reduction to make task initiation more successful. Knowing how attention issues have impacted my own life as both a student and researcher, I've also worked to put these techniques into play to improve my own time management and executive functioning to meet the demands of academia.

Biology

Biology

I have a B.S. in biology from Caltech and three years of laboratory experience in synthetic biology. I am the 3rd author on a paper in Cell Systems on properties of genetic circuits. My B.S. in Biology from Caltech drew upon coursework from the Genetics and Molecular Biology tracks in order to fulfill my degree requirements. Working in a prominent synthetic biology lab, I was trained by a physicist-turned-biologist and mentored by a former mathematics major who found novel ways to approach biological research.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I've completed coursework that includes organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical equilibrium & analysis, and physical chemistry. Additionally, my broader background in STEM encompassed math through differential equations and physics through quantum and wave mechanics, giving me interdisciplinary insight into how the subjects all fit together. I have 5 years of research experience between labs at Caltech and BWH/Harvard/MIT that required me to put those skills into play. On the relevant tests at the high school level, I scored 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, as well as 800 on the SAT II Chemistry exam.
Cooking

Cooking

As a Caltech undergraduate, I had the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses in unique subjects. After taking the cooking course, PA016: Cooking Basics, I worked as a teaching assistant for the class for nearly 4 years, as well as volunteering as an assistant cook for a plethora of events--most recently a 15-course charity dinner for some kind folks from JPL! While not a master chef by any means, I'm familiar with a wide variety of styles and techniques at a working level. Styles covered included Italian, British, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Russian, Southern, Lebanese, and Argentine, with my teams incorporating additional elements of Vietnamese and Danish cuisine in their "Iron Chef"-esque final exam.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

6+ years of experience working with K-12 students of all abilities to improve their math scores! With personal experience in MATHCOUNTS, Continental Math League, and Science Olympiad, I incorporate challenging competition-level math questions alongside weekly textbook problems to get my students to push themselves to think outside the box.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

Besides my own studies in biology and the five years I spent working as a researcher at Caltech and BWH, I've worked as a tutor to introduce scientific concepts to K-12 audiences. I've helped lead scientific literature review and discussion for high schoolers, worked to provide feedback on science projects, and lead a year-long course for a small group of middle school students looking to gain exposure to the life sciences. I like to draw upon books, popular science articles, even computer games in an attempt to gamify the learning experience and drive student interest and motivation.
English

English

I have 6+ years working with K-12 students (including non-native speakers) to improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. As part of my approach, I like to incorporate works of literary merit, focusing on the etymology of new terms to deduce meaning from context, as well as the unique voice of the author to build up a toolkit for the student to utilize in their own writing. Extensive experience with essay revising and editing.
Genetics

Genetics

My degree drew upon coursework from the Genetics and Molecular Biology tracks in order to fulfill my requirements. I've taken graduate-level coursework in Genetics, Phylogenetics, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, and other related sub-fields. Reading

Reading

As a reading tutor, I lean heavily on literary analysis, etymology, and context clues. What is the text already telling us? If we can't deduce it, what other skills can we employ to utilize the broad background knowledge we already possess? Depending on grade level, I prefer to make use of well-known works of literary merit—particularly poems and short stories that are easily digestible across tutoring sessions—that students will likely encounter in future courses and exams, helping them to build a toolkit to understand references, symbolism, allusions, and allegories.

Kind, knowledgeable, and versatile tutor who inspires curiosity.

Kyle is a warm, patient, and highly knowledgeable tutor who brings out the joy of learning. He created a welcoming atmosphere that made it easy for my daughter to engage with new concepts and express her thinking in English. Through fun yet intellectually rich activities like Fermi questions and the 24 Game, she not only deepened her appreciation for the essence of math but also gained confidence to explore new areas of learning. We feel very fortunate to have found Kyle, and we hope to continue working with him not only for math, but for other subjects as well.
