About Elle

I have been told many times I have changed someone's life in a short period of time. If I set my mind to helping someone, I will do whatever it takes, even if it means reviewing past work and creating study aids. I have yet to work with a student who has not met his/her goals and said I was an outstanding teacher. I graduated summa cum laude from Harvard, was admitted early action, and was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. I graduated in the top 5% of my class, so I have a strong academic background.

I completed two majors at Harvard, one in science, another in the arts. I also completed my pre-med requirements and placed into graduate level classics as a freshman (Ancient Greek). I have excellent writing/editing skills and numerous times have taught students how to write--this is often poorly taught in school and hinders students immensely at the college level. But a good teacher can bring students light years ahead in their writing, and it is important to focus on this as early as possible.

One thing I do well is to understand the individual and what the problems are with a given subject matter and/or learning. I am the tutor who is called in to help someone turn around academic performance. When I started tutoring, I was often given the students no other tutor wanted, because it was said they could not succeed. But they did. I have helped those with learning disabilities, medical issues (brain tumors with subsequent cognitive issues), and those who are merely under-performing or not performing at the level they wish. I love a challenge and believe deeply in the ability to change, academically and across all areas.

I often give additional time at no cost, if the student has financial constraints or asks me to work within a budget. My goal is to make the student self sufficient and not allow money to compromise progress. Many times I have found I need less time than other tutors by problem solving core issues at the outset. I read and study from the same material the student is given, so I can see what the teacher is expecting and try to work with that specific curriculum. I also often do outside work and do not bill for the most of this time. If there are financial issues with affording my time, please message me so I can work with you.

If students in Boston need a quiet and private space, I have access to one right near Copley for limited hours during the week. I can also cover a day or two in Portland, ME and areas north of Boston, during my commute.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.


My undergraduate degree from Harvard was in Biological Anthropology and Fine Arts. I completed all the required coursed in biological and social anthropology, with a straight A average. I am more than qualified to tutor and teach Anthropology, and I have done so with students in the CA area. My tutoring method in Anthropology mirrors my method in math and sciences----I try to look at where the student is having issues and problem solve from there. For some it relates to poor handle on the content and it requires teaching the material back. I find some learners who are not auditory will not absorb lectures well. With others it relates to a fundamental issue with how the individual approaches the discipline and a concept that he/she cannot excel. Whatever the reason, I will shift the way I teach back the subject and try to make it dynamic, fun and something the student can absorb. I will work on specific assignments, correct tests, summarize reading material, and look for any area where the student is not performing well and try to advance his/her work.

College Counseling

I have experience with college counseling when I tutored on the west coast; mainly students came to me who wanted to apply to Ivy League schools and needed help with their essays. As someone who was admitted to Harvard early action, I know I put together a strong application. I had excellent feedback on my editing and working with student's on their college applications. I am able to help with everything from the essay to planning out the number of applications and how to meet deadlines. I know how to help students achieve results, and many of the students I worked with credited me with helping them get in to the college of their choice, despite being told they had weaker test scores. Many students overlook the importance of short essays and telling their story, they rely instead on extra curriculars and test scores. I encourage honesty and modesty, and I love to help the individual represent his/her strong points. I am confident I am able to help students with a range of different kinds of applications and again meet the necessary deadlines. I love helping people achieve their goals, so helping with college counseling is a great experience.


I started tutoring students with ADHD, dyslexia and medical illnesses that affected their performance (brain tumors) when I was at Harvard. I tutored for an agency in CA that sent me to all the special needs students. I have worked with special needs students in the Brookline public schools and LA private and public schools. My method is variable student to student, it's very individualized, but it is of great importance to focus on self esteem and be encouraging so that these students don't anticipate under performing or feel incapable of succeeding. I will employ a range of different techniques---index cards, speaking out each step of problem solving, fact checking, estimation, et al. I try to figure out if the student is a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner and adapt my cues accordingly. If a student has problems with memory and consistency, then repetition is key.
