I founded Code For You in 2020 and ran it for three years, offering free Python instruction to students without access to technical resources. I designed the curriculum and taught more than 100 students, mostly middle and high schoolers, in small groups and one-on-one. Ninety percent finished the course. Students do not drop out because the material is too hard. They drop out when they stop believing they can get it, so most of my job was catching that moment early and changing the approach before a student decided they were bad at this.
I teach by asking questions rather than lecturing, because I want to find the exact place where the understanding breaks instead of re-explaining something a student already knows. I ask students to talk through their reasoning out loud, including on wrong answers, since the wrong answer usually shows me more than the right one. I work well with students who have decided they are not math people, because that is almost always a confidence problem rather than an ability one.
