I'm Melissa! I graduated cum laude from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University with my BA in Music, and will be graduating with a MM in Vocal Performance at Boston Conservatory at Berklee in May 2026. I have extensive knowledge as it pertains to Vocal Arts, Music Theory, Sight Singing, Aural Skills, Diction and IPA, and Music History. I have studied classical voice for 7 years, and currently work in a classroom setting as a Music History TA for undergraduate students. I have also given private voice lessons to highschool and college aged students. Additionally, I have led college level choirs through rehearsals and soprano sectionals, and also have experience rehearsing children's choruses. I am comfortable tutoring highschool and collegiate level students in any general music related subjects, as well as offering private voice instruction. My preferred format is online, via zoom. I have 4 years of teaching experience, through both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.
My teaching method is to focus on several key concepts, then provide examples for how to apply these concepts into the music studied. For example, building a dominant seventh chord based on intervals, and then applying that chord directly to a harmonic sequence. For voice related studies, I like to provide freedom to the students of what songs or repertoire interests them the most. This way, students are more fulfilled in the learning process as we navigate technical challenges such as breath work, registration, and resonance. What matters most of all in tutoring is that the student improves with every session, and gains a greater depth to the knowledge in the specific musical area. I make student growth the priority of every session, and come prepared to work through numerous musical topics with competence, patience, and an open mind to various student needs. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!
