Hello, I'm Courtney!

I'm an attorney with over a decade of experience as a criminal and civil litigator. I've also served as an adjunct law school professor, competitive gymnastics coach, and mentor. When I'm not working, you can find me studying Spanish, reading (in both Spanish and English), volunteering, or seeking new learning opportunities. I am a lifelong learner through and through—and I’d love to support you on your Spanish language journey!

I started learning Spanish in middle school and quickly fell in love with the language when I realized it could connect me with people and cultures around the world. At the University of Connecticut, I studied abroad in Spain with a host family, volunteered as a Spanish-English translator for a healthcare center, and majored in Spanish, graduating cum laude and as an Honors Scholar. As a law student, I volunteered as a Spanish-English translator for legal service providers.

Today, Spanish is part of my daily life—from communicating with loved ones to keeping up with current events through Spanish-language news podcasts. Spanish continues to be a passion of mine, and I hope to help you find your own passion for learning the language too!

I tailor each lesson to your goals, learning style, and pace. I work with students and adult learners alike.

I provide STUDENT SUPPORT by clarifying class material, building vocabulary and grammar foundations, and cultivating confidence in Spanish reading and writing.

I offer CONVERSATIONAL PRACTICE to improve your Spanish speaking through personalized sessions based on your interests and goals.

I develop CUSTOMIZED LESSONS so you can learn at your own pace with topics tailored to your needs.

I SIMPLIFY GRAMMAR CONCEPTS by breaking down complex grammar rules with clear explanations and review exercises designed to help them stick.

Criminal Justice

I served as a prosecutor in Greater Baltimore for 7+ years, where I litigated high-stakes criminal prosecutions, including homicides, narcotics trafficking, and assaults with firearms. I had substantial contact with members of the community affected by these crimes, including witnesses, victims, and confidential informants. As the head of the Major Offender Unit, I developed and presented several trainings on various aspects of the criminal justice system to attorneys, law enforcement officers, and public school officials. My criminal law experience also includes placements with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender (Aggravated Homicide Unit) and the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City. I also have experience working on the civil side of the criminal justice system as in-house and litigation counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, where I handled complex civil rights litigation.

Legal Writing

In my 12+ years as a complex civil and criminal litigation attorney, I have comprehensive experience writing legal pleadings in both State and Federal court. As an adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, I instructed law students on effective and persuasive legal writing and provided individualized feedback to improve the quality of their work product. My legal writing expertise extends to scholarly writing as well: I served as Articles Editor for the Journal of Land and Development in law school, and I currently work as a cite-checker for the Massachusetts Law Review, the longest continually published law review in the nation.

Writing

I have 15+ years of experience writing and editing in academic, legal, and professional settings. I currently work as a cite-checker for the Massachusetts Law Review, the longest continually published law review in the country. As an undergraduate in the UConn Honors program, I researched and wrote a 30-page academic thesis in Spanish. As an award-winning attorney with 10+ years of experience, my career requires clear, concise writing for judges, clients, and juries. I have a proven track record of writing persuasive grant applications, legal memoranda, and court pleadings. I enjoy helping students refine their writing voice, structure persuasive arguments effectively, and meet the expectations of academic and professional audiences.
