Hi, my name is Drew Temel! I recently received my B.A. in Political Science, magna cum laude, from Duke University and am an incoming J.D. candidate at Harvard Law School through their Junior Deferral Program (Class of 2030). The Program requires a two-year deferral of your admission, during which I'll be receiving my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in fiction writing at Temple University. My editorial approach draws from years of experience across academic, creative, professional, and persuasive writing. I've taken countless Political Science seminars, participated in numerous Creative Writing workshops, and applied to over 15 graduate schools. During my time at Duke, I worked as a writing consultant to help my classmates communicate with precision and purpose. I've also been a freelance tutor focused on college admissions essays for nearly a year, working with students to craft a narrative and sharpen their voice.

I know how high the stakes are in these admissions processes. I know that the personal statement and supplemental essays are challenging projects. Regardless of the format or subject, my philosophy in admissions essays remains the same: tell an authentic story. My goal is to help the student convey a narrative about their life with honesty and intention. Through thoughtful reflection and analysis, each student can craft a compelling essay that reveals their character, values, and aspirations. I will help to find the right story that leaves a lasting impression on admissions offices. Another core tenet of mine is that writing is editing. Students will have a demonstrable advantage if they commit the time to draft, edit, and do it again. Throughout this process, they will discover and refine their narrative. Therefore, I'll ideally be with my students from brainstorming through multiple stages of editing, turning strong ideas into even stronger prose. Please reach out if you want a brief, free consultation or have any questions about me or my process! I'll respond as soon as possible!

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I’ve completed a full creative writing curriculum at Duke University, including multiple advanced fiction workshops and independent study. My undergraduate thesis was a novella, written under faculty mentorship and awarded distinction. I’m currently pursuing my MFA in fiction writing at Temple University, where I continue to develop my craft through intensive workshops and sustained long-form projects.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I developed a strong foundation in essay writing through my Political Science major at Duke University, where I completed advanced coursework in political theory, constitutional law, and public policy. My writing emphasized clarity, argumentation, and analytical rigor across research papers, policy memos, and critical essays. I further refined these skills through internships in District Attorneys Offices and the Department of Justice's Environmental Crimes Section, where I wrote briefs and reports for attorneys and judges. This background has prepared me to craft persuasive, well-structured writing across academic and real-world contexts.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I’ve focused on fiction throughout my writing career, completing a full sequence of undergraduate fiction workshops at Duke University, culminating in a novella-length thesis that received distinction. My experience includes close mentorship with published authors to sharpen my skills in structure, voice, and character development. I’m now pursuing my MFA in fiction at Temple University. My work centers on psychological, voice-driven narratives that blend realism with surreal elements.
