I attended Simmons College where I received my B.S. in Mathematics and an M.A.T. in Teaching. I have experience as a math teacher for grades 7-12, some of which was in a special needs school for students with dyslexia/language processing disorders. After becoming a stay-at-home mother, I began tutoring. I work very closely with Nashoba Regional School District in Bolton and receive many of my students from the counselors there. As a mathematics tutor with 24 years experience, I strive to understand each student's learning style and utilize a variety of approaches (i.e. visual, auditory, tactile, etc.) to accomplish understanding. I believe that it is important to know each student as a unique individual so that I may better relate to them and also make relevant connections to the material. I strive to create a comfortable learning environment where the student feels comfortable to express their concerns and ask questions relevant to the material. Students are required to think independently and are given strategies for approaching the material. My sessions are structured to get the student to feel confident enough to have intelligent dialogue regarding the material. I accomplish this by asking them to explain their reasoning/approach to a problem and ask leading questions and guide them to help them reach a solution, as opposed to "spoon feeding" answers. While working with my students, I also establish strong, professional relationships and collaboration with school counselors, math teachers, and parents to assist in the educational process. My approach to my tutoring sessions has proven successful because comprehension of the material improves and I am able to develop solid, trusting bonds with my students, parents, and the schools I work with.
