I am licensed to teach Spanish, French, and history, and I currently enjoy teaching two foreign languages at the high-school level. Before I was a teacher, I tutored a variety of subjects throughout my undergraduate career, and for six years prior to that I was a bilingual tutor in the non-profit sector. My subject areas included Spanish, French, history, and Latin, as well as writing in multiple languages.
While my classroom position allows me the rewarding experience of working with groups, I have always loved one-on-one work. My achievements as a language tutor were just as rewarding as my academic achievements; nothing can compare to the palpable change in a student's attitude when he/she has become more confident in a subject area.
I began my career as a bilingual multi-subject tutor in the non-profit sector. Having grown up in a predominantly Spanish-speaking area in Massachusetts, I ultimately decided to pursue a career as a classroom foreign language teacher. While Spanish is currently the most in-demand language in my area, I also teach French and am preparing to teach Latin.
I take pride in bringing my experience as a language learner into my private tutoring experiences. I naturally empathize with my students, since I have been through the process myself. I complement this understanding with my education as a language professional; the theories and techniques I have learned in my graduate program provide me with a range of methods for approaching the problems of diverse students with their separate needs.
For several years before becoming a licensed teacher, my specialty was assisting high-school students who were struggling with writing assignments in English. I became adept at supporting students at all levels of the composition process, from the grammatical level to the deeper argumentative structures needed for effective writing. I continue to practice these skills as a classroom teacher today.
