I have sat on both sides of the investment banking interview table. As a founding team member of Wofford Advisors, I worked on approximately $3 billion of completed M&A transactions. I was also responsible for interviewing more than 100 candidates and helping select our incoming analyst classes. That combination gives me a unique perspective on what actually separates candidates who receive offers from those who don't.

My approach to interview preparation goes well beyond memorizing technical questions. Having personally evaluated candidates for investment banking roles, I know getting the answer right is only part of the interview. I focus on what the interviewer is really testing, the follow-up questions that expose whether you understand a concept, how you communicate when you're under pressure, and whether you come across as someone the team would want working alongside them on a live deal.
My transaction experience allows me to bring that same real-world perspective to technical preparation. I have worked directly with founders, private equity investors, financial sponsors, corporate executives, and other investment bankers throughout live M&A processes. When we cover valuation, DCFs, precedent transactions, or financial modeling, my goal is not simply to teach you the textbook answer. I want you to understand how these concepts are actually used and why they matter in a transaction.
If an interviewer asks you about a recent transaction, you should be able to do more than recite the purchase price and valuation multiple. We can work through how to discuss the strategic rationale, valuation, buyer perspective, potential risks, and your own view of the transaction in a way that demonstrates genuine commercial judgment.
For candidates with upcoming interviews or Superdays, I offer mock interviews tailored to the role and level you are pursuing. I will identify where an interviewer is likely to push you and give you direct feedback on both the substance of your answers and how you deliver them.
