MY APPROACH

I firmly believe that anyone can succeed in mathematics, science, and engineering with the right help and encouragement. My approach to tutoring is to help students gain a deeper understanding of fundamental concepts, to develop skills and master techniques for solving real problems, and to build confidence through practice and encouragement. I help students understand not only the "what" of each topic, but also the "why" and the "how".

I emphasize three key dimensions in preparing students for math, science, and engineering:

1. Conceptual understanding
2. Problem-solving methods
3. Test-taking strategies

MY EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring a wide variety of physics, astronomy, and electrical engineering topics, as well as the advanced mathematics required to understand these subjects. I have helped high school, college, and graduate students improve their grades or pass courses that they had previously failed.

I hold a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Boston University, a Master of Science in Management from MIT, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Dartmouth College. I currently work as a electrical engineer at a company that makes large scale electrical energy storage systems for the electrical grid and other high reliability applications.

POLICIES, TERMS, and CONDITIONS

1. A minimum of one-hour per session is required.

2. For multiple subjects in a single session, a minimum of 45-minutes per subject per session is required.

3. Cancellation and/or rescheduling of any scheduled lesson requires a minimum of 24-hour notice. If the student cancels or reschedules a lesson with fewer than 24 hours notice, or if the student does not show up at all, either online or in-person, the student will be charged the full amount for the entire lesson.

4. Refunds will not be provided if the student is late arriving to or signing in for a scheduled lesson, nor will the lesson be extended past the scheduled end time.

5. If a student is more than 15 minutes late to a lesson, I will assume that he/she is not attending, and the lesson will be cancelled. Depending on the circumstances, a cancellation fee, up to and including the full amount of the scheduled lesson, may or may not be assessed.

6. For online lessons, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that his/her computer meets the minimum system requirements for the Wyzant online tutoring platform and that the student's network connection is working properly and that it has adequate bandwidth.

7. For in-person lessons of students under the age of 18, a parent or responsible adult must be present during the entire lesson.

8. Published rates are for one-on-one tutoring only. Group rates are available upon request. Advertised rates are subject to change at any time, but once a student signs up for lessons, the actual hourly rate will remain constant unless the student (or parent/guardian) agrees to a rate increase.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Differential Equations was a crucial prerequisite for admission to this program, and for most of the courses I took to earn the degree. I also tutored undergraduate engineering students in Differential Equations for two years while I was a graduate student. And I use Differential Equations as a key part of my current job as an engineer at a company that provides software for numerical modeling and simulation of dynamic systems based on differential equations and linear algebra.
Electrical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering

I hold a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Boston University. While I was a graduate student, I tutored undergraduates in a wide variety of math, physics, and electrical engineering subjects--including electrical circuits, signals and systems, electromagnetics, digital signal processing, etc. I currently work as a signal processing engineer for an engineering software company.

Excellent tutor

Rick is a very thorough and knowledgeable teacher. He explains very well and makes the subject matter easier to understand. He taught me some basics of computer engineering such as Digital Logic Design, Combinational versus Sequential logic, SR Latch specification, SR Latch truth table etc. I enjoyed it.

God Sent

I had used a tutor on here previously that said he knew MATLAB and could help me. I tried Rick and he knew MATLAB. Not only did he already have the problem solved by our lesson but he also showed me how to debug my code and taught me tips and tricks. Truly is the man and a patient teacher. Will recommend him to any of my friends.

Knowledgeable

Rick's style of teaching me mat lab and going step by step into each line of code really helped me understand what was going on. He asks questions in order to help fully understand the material rather than just telling.

Ivette, 8 lessons with Rick

Extremely Knowledgeable and patient college level physics tutor

Rick is an excellent tutor. I needed a physics college tutor for my son when he had to repeat his college level physics 2: Electricity magnetism and fluids course. With Rick's tutoring throughout the semester, my son went from a D grade to a "B" and received an "A" in several quizzes. Rick is excellent at clearly explaining the topics. He was able to connect with my son and help him develop a genuine enthusiasm for the course. My son would share with me how Rick helped him see how the topics applied in the real world. This got my son looking forward to taking other similar physic courses in college. Rick is very detailed and taught my son how to be detailed and organize his labs assignments so that he excelled in the assignments. Rick is truly caring. He helped my son prepare for his final exam which he passed with a "B" grade. If your child needs help with college level physics Rick is the perfect tutor.

Experienced and Knowledgeable Tutor

He explains concepts thoroughly and makes difficult problems easier to understand with a fun and interesting approach. I would recommend Rick to anyone else who needs a little extra help. I understand my mistakes by the end of the lesson and know what to do to be able to solve any problem.

Knowledgeable

My son felt he knew his material but appeared to lack patience and using my sons language “came across as condescending”

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your honest feedback. I am very sorry that I came across that way. I should have been more understanding and helpful instead of being impatient. Given that he is reviewing for his final exam in less than two weeks, I was expecting that he would have had a better understanding of the fundamental concepts at this point. I have issued a refund for this lesson, and I am offering a free one-hour lesson.

Very good at explaining and patient

Rick was really nice and does an excellent job of explaining physics concepts clearly. I would highly recommend him to others.

Knowledgeable, patient and pleasant mannered.

AP Physics - C; He was patient and knowledgeable. He was pleasant to deal with, made sure the student understands the concepts well. Made the student feel comfortable. Good first impression.

Tyagas, 3 lessons with Rick

Excellent and flexible

Rick helped when I really needed it. He made the time work. He made a difficult topic easy by helping me to truly understand the topic. I would definitely recommend him to a friend.
