I am a Japanese native speaker who has a deep interest in helping students learn Japanese and learn how to be successful in Japanese society. I lived in Japan until this past year and worked as a civil servant for seven years. During that time, I helped JET Program workers from America learn how to talk with their bosses and co-workers. This means I can help you learn smooth business Japanese as well as more casual language. In Japan and in the US, I frequently advise LGBTQ students and students of color about Japanese culture and how to adjust to Japanese society. Both Japanese language and culture can be tough--but I will work with you to help you succeed and achieve your goals!

My favorite aspect of tutoring is tailoring my lessons to YOUR needs and desires. If you would like anime, but need more speaking practice, I can come up with role-play situations that will allow you to talk about your interests. If you like Japanese culture and want to read more high-level texts, we can work together to read simple newspaper articles from NHK or simple books about Japanese history. We can work together to help you work on your weak points while also speaking to your passions!

This past semester, I worked as a Japanese language teaching assistant at Harvard University. While I was not teaching at the head of classrooms, I did helped professors create future Japanese courses. I also was the volunteer instructor for the Japanese Language Soirée at the Japan Society of Boston from 2017 through the spring of 2018. I created interactive lesson plans that taught students about Japanese culture, and worked with beginning to advanced students. I also worked in Japan with a NPO called Seika Global Net to teach Japanese to adults from other countries who were living in Japan.

If you love the language, but worry about how you'll fit into Japanese culture; if you love Japanese culture, but you don't know how to start learning the language--reach out to me! Together we can make sure that you succeed and achieve your goals.

Incredible and knowledgeable tutor

I just finished my third Japanese tutoring session with Aki, and I have to say that she is phenomenal. She is very knowledgable and patient. There isn't a question I've asked that she hasn't known the answer to, and I'm already feeling significantly more comfortable on topics that have confused me for a long time. Since I'm not in school and I'm learning for my own enjoyment, the excellent background information and additional vocabulary has really helped me expand understanding of the language. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a Japanese tutor.

One of the Best Tutors I’ve Had, Period

I've been with Aki-sensei since mid-2020, and in all the time that I've been her student, she's been nothing short of patient, kind, and supportive of everything I've wanted to do. With whatever random questions I'd have about Japanese culture or the language, she never made me feel dumb or judged me. Now I KNOW that's kind of a low bar, but you don't know how much that means to me to know that I can ask her anything. And then on top of that, she's amazingly good at explaining complex subjects in a way that a native English speaker can understand. I never meshed well with Japanese language instruction being taught in Japanese, so to have somebody like her be there has helped me immensely in gaining an understanding of things I never would've been able to figure out on my own. So to wrap up this incredibly long review: whether you're LGBTQ+, somebody like me who's afraid of messing up or seeming ignorant, somebody who wants a tutor that can offer incredibly well-thought-out explanations, or any combination of the three, Aki is an amazing and invaluable tutor to have. You won't regret it!

あき様は凄くかっこいい先生ですね。

[LESSON 133 / 1ST LESSON IN YEAR 5782] I enjoyed playing Shiritori and the Jiho game. This Thursday (9/15) is Yom Kippur, which is the holiest day in the Jewish Calendar. See you on Yom Kippur! :)

Stellar tutor

Aki continues to be an amazing Japanese tutor and instructor. She is patient and knows what exercises are best required for my child. My child has been working with Aki for around 3 years now and we love her and will continue to for as long as we can.

FANTASTIC!

This was my first lesson but my boyfriend referred her to me. She is absolutely wonderful and so knowledgeable about the nuances and meanings behind Japanese words. She is very encouraging and is willing to go at a good pace for beginners. I felt like she was always very professional and was on track to give you the most for your money in a lesson.

Very adaptable

Aki understands my needs, and adjusts her lessons accordingly. We were able to overcome some technical issues to make the lessons work. She was open to feedback, and I provided her input.

Wonderful tutor!

I was feeling very nervous about taking my first lesson, but Aki was very kind and knowledgeable. I was able to laugh throughout the whole lesson, and really start to feel comfortable. When I struggled to find words Aki was able to help me find them, and was very patient with listening to me say “ummm” while I racked my brain. If you are looking for a great Japanese tutor, look no further than Aki!
