Bio

I am a certified teacher in English Language Arts (ELA) at the secondary level. I was a lead classroom teacher for 2 years, but I've been involved with education for about 12 years. Much of that was working with small groups or one-on-one. Currently, I work to improve middle school students' reading skills in a Massachusetts district as I earn a specialist license in the field.

I try to make a tutoring plan individualized as much as possible for each student. This means that I assess the student's current skill level, determine how the student naturally learns best, and then tailor a plan specifically for them. We start at the level they come in, and work from there, at the student's pace. I don't force students to work with me, I work with them. As they progress, I vary the teaching methods to keep the material fresh and the student engaged.

I specialize in any form of Language Arts, from reading skills to spelling/vocabulary to comprehension to literature studies to creative writing to essays. Many of these skills transcend subjects (like reading comprehension for history texts or essays for college applications), and I adapt lessons accordingly for specific content. For K-6 students, I'm willing to work in a variety of subjects. The same is true for older students, but slightly more limited, so please check the subjects listed in my profile. We can also work on study/executive functioning skills if that's what you need help with the most.

For in-person sessions, I am willing to meet with students at a public library or at their home, provided a guardian is present. If your preferred meeting place exceeds my designated traveling radius, please contact me and we may be able to work something out.

Thank you for considering me as your tutor, and I hope to hear from you!

GRE

GRE

As a licensed teacher, I am very familiar with standardized tests and their expectations. I have given several lessons on test-taking strategies to a whole classroom, small group, and one-to-one. I had to take the GRE myself to get into graduate school; since I applied to literature programs, the schools looked more closely at the verbal portion of my score. I went on to double major in children's literature and creative writing.

Study Skills

Study Skills

Last year, I tutored low-performing students on FCAT preparation, which greatly involved helping them know how to study for that specific test. These students exceeded their goals of 20% improvement. Personally, I have always been among the top 10% of my classes, so I know what good study and test-taking strategies consist of. However, I also know that not each student studies the same, so I always focus on how each individual student learns and what would most benefit them in terms of review, preparation, and mentality.

Jeannie was wonderful!

I didn't know an online tutoring session for my son could be this rewarding (for both of us). We tried another site previously - this is far superior. Jeannie had the most thorough hour with my son evaluating his reading comprehension, coming up with a plan, and then communicating that with me. We've booked her through the summer!
