About Laura

I am a licensed English Teacher with 11+ years experience tutoring students in reading, writing, standardized test preparation, and college essays. I enjoy working with students of all ages and capabilities. I have an extensive library, including novels, prep books, and worksheets that I've created to address specific needs.

I can teach you how to construct useful outlines for the four main essay types, demystify grammar rules and vocabulary, help you to identify thesis ideas and supporting quotes, and share useful tips for the SSAT/SAT/ACT. No matter the book or writing assignment, I will tailor instruction to your individual needs.

I hope you will choose me to be your tutor. I welcome new students and will always do my best to accommodate schedules.

Sincerely,
Laura C.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to teach English in the state of Massachusetts for grades 5-12. I have also spent over 7 years as a literacy tutor in elementary and middle schools. I have worked with students on reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary, and learning how to write effectively. Students I tutored enjoyed significant improvements in reading and writing skills.

English

I have helping students and adults to improve their writing and reading skills since 2006. I also help with standardized test preparation, including the SSAT, SAT, and ACT.

Grammar

Grammar is the glue that holds sentences together. When used properly, it fades into the background and lets words shine through. When used improperly or avoided all together, it bogs down sentences and makes them hard to understand.

I will be happy to explain 10 important rules for comma usage and how to use semicolons and colons properly. I can explain the difference between a sentence fragment (dependent clause) and a complete sentence (independent clause). I can also diagnose and explain a number of common grammatical errors: lack of noun-verb agreement, lack of parallelism, misplaced modifiers, and comma splices to name a few.

I enjoy sharing my knowledge of grammar with students. Please let me know if I can help your son or daughter.

Writing

No matter your goals in life, the ability to write a well-organized letter, essay, or research paper will help you achieve them. I have enjoyed teaching all forms of writing and proper outlining techniques to students for more than 11 years. As a writer myself, I have a special passion for helping students to tap into their creativity.

Wonderful motivator and extremely prepared!

Laura had made an amazing connection with my son. She not only provided him with fantastic SAT preparation but also has motivated him to increase his efforts on his own. Couldn't ask for anything more.
