I'm Kristen! I am a rising senior at Phillips Academy Andover, one of the nation's most premier (and oldest!) boarding schools. As a current student, I understand the demands of balancing coursework and deadlines, which is why I find ways to explain topics concisely and efficiently while tailoring my curriculum to individual student needs. My lesson plans typically feature a mix of engaging exercises and call-and-response before I go into explicit explanations. At the end of every lesson, I will ask students what they thought went well during the lesson, and what I can do better next time to best support them.
I have over two years of tutoring experience across the subjects of English, essay writing, math, and ESL. I was both self-employed and affiliated with a local Chinese school in my area. I've taught kids aged 6-17, and typically teach in 1-on-1 settings-- but I'm open to groups as well! I believe strongly in the value of demonstration, inquiry-based learning, and continuous repetition to master a skill.
I am well-versed in the humanities: I have published a book (an Amazon Top New Release in Poetry for Young Adults), achieved national awards for my poetry and essays, and love writing on my own in my free time. To further establish my credentials, I scored perfectly on my ACT English section and scored in the top 99th percentile in both the SAT and ACT, simply by self-studying. I would be happy to give you or your student guidance on effective study methods and standardized testing strategies, as these tests are very fresh in my mind.
I want to individualize my instruction as much as possible to best benefit my students. I am extremely communicative and open to any suggestions you may have. Feel free to reach out with any questions, or if you'd like to schedule a lesson!
