Hi! My name is Austin and I graduated from Tufts University in 2021 with a degree in English and Sociology. Originally from Colorado, I plan to stay in Massachusetts for the foreseeable future because I just love it here. Hi! My name is Austin and I graduated from Tufts University in 2021 with a degree in English and Sociology. Originally from Colorado, I plan to stay in Massachusetts for the foreseeable future because I just love it here. Since graduating, I have been a special education teaching assistant for grades 7-12, a barista, a tutor for 826 Boston at the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science (grades 7-12), and a scheduler at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

I have two years of experience teaching and tutoring. In my special education role, I helped lead students through topics ranging from history through arithmetic while tending to students' social-emotional needs with therapeutic goals in mind. In my six months a tutor for 826 Boston, I fell in love with helping students improve their writing in subjects ranging from biology, U.S. history, creative writing, and college essays. My approach centers on building students' confidence in what they want to say: rather than focusing solely on grammar, verbiage, and structure, I help students get at the heart of what interests them about a subject - or, if they are totally uninterested, to at least make the topic their own. After 826, I have continued to provide one on one writing help to people I know applying to jobs and graduate programs. Students and clients I have tutored over the past two years have matched with the prestigious QuestBridge Scholarship program and gained admittance to Northeastern University, Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern, Parsons School of Design, and Harvard Law School.

At my previous AmeriCorps education role, I was one of the people to whom teachers would send their students for college counseling advice. I was involved in guiding seniors through the Common Application and school-specific applications, including the selection of colleges, the personal statement, supplements, making their resume pop for admissions counselors, and administrative details such as school-specific application quirks and early decision. I am also passionate about talking students through how to select colleges based on fit and likelihood of admission as well as providing them with emotional support from beginning to end. I have provided students with advice on the financial aid process and talk them through the FAFSA, and I can supply practical advice for being on financial aid at school as a recent graduate who was on financial aid and a soon-to-be graduate student taking out federal loans.

I have a BA in English from Tufts University, as well as two years of experience in education. One of these years included a writing-specific nonprofit where I helped students with a wide range of writing projects, from lab reports to their college essays to AP exams. I have continued to support friends and family with their writing, especially with graduate school essays and job applications.

My high school students have gained admission to Harvard College, Colby College, and have obtained the prestigious QuestBridge Match Scholarship. Since moving on from that role, I have tutored clients seeking help with graduate-level personal statements. These students have gained admission to Harvard Law School, Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern, and Yale's School of Public Health.

I obtained my bachelor's degree in sociology from Tufts University in 2021. Throughout my studies, I took a wide range of courses, from Sociological Theory, to Urban Sociology, to a seminar on masculinity, to quantitative methods using Stata. I learned qualitative research methods through a research project that involved in-depth, semi-structured interviews with nurses during the pandemic as well as ethnographic research with a local activist organization. My interest in the subject has meant that I've continued studying my old textbooks - you can be sure that I've stayed sharp in sociology.
