Hello, I'm Rena, and I love helping English language learners (ELLs) reach their learning goals! I have 18 years of experience teaching both in the U.S. and in other countries and in many contexts, including public and private schools and college/university settings. I've taught ELLs of all ages and levels and from many different backgrounds.
After getting a BA in Russian language from Dartmouth College, I earned a MA in TESOL for adults at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey and later a MEd from BU in TESOL for grades 5-12. I currently hold a New York State Professional license in TESOL.
I have taught middle and high school ESL courses as well as provided sheltered instruction and push-in classroom support in various content areas such as ELA, science, algebra, and history. For adults including college/university courses, I have taught skills courses such as conversation, pronunciation, grammar, writing, and TOEFL prep, and many of these courses were focused on English for academic purposes.
I tailor lessons to fit the needs of my students and the teaching context, so the teaching methods that I use can vary. I scaffold learning with pre-teaching, making predictions, and other methods, and I use authentic materials when possible. In a tutoring context, it is often possible to cater to the individual's preferred learning style. In a first lesson, we could work together to decide how to best support your learning.
