I'm Guy, but you can call me Zac if you want. I'm a civil engineering (structural) EI specializing in the design of cold-formed steel framing and cladding. I have a bachelor's in civil engineering, minoring in secondary education. My experience tutoring has been largely focused on ACT prep, though I've helped college students and high schoolers through homework and projects.

For my minor, I taught in a classroom setting for elementary, middle, and high schoolers, but the majority of my experience has been tutoring-specific. In college, I tutored a few dozen STEM majors through many classes in our major, and outside of my college experience I've tutored at the high school level for ACT prep and other STEM subjects. I've even tutored for grammar and English

My methodology changes depending on the student and subject, but I favor a concept-driven approach. I believe most students struggle with these subjects because many schools teach with a mechanics-first perspective. Instead, I encourage students to consider every question to be a puzzle. These subjects aren't esoteric: When you have a clear idea of what solution you're looking for and how to take the given information to its logical conclusion, you develop confidence and purpose.

I'd love for you to contact me with any questions about the subjects I teach, and I take active effort in making time to respond. Whether you're wanting to get ahead of your peers, catch up in your work, or have an academic emergency--I'm here.

ACT English

ACT English

Most English teachers have been isolated in the academic bubble for so long, they have forgotten what it was like to have learned these ideas in the first place. If you want a practical communicator with direct explanations, then I am the Guy who can help you. My background in STEM subjects helps me to stay grounded, with simple conveyance of grammar, vocabulary, and standardized test prep for the English language.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. I consistently add points to my students' Math ACT scores, and am available in my time and flexible in my approaches to tailor best to students. My career helps to provide me with real-world examples and strong conceptual understanding that can give students a more tangible grasp of the subject material.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. My career compels me to read data tables and expert commentary on STEM subjects for personal enrichment as well as application in my projects. So, I understand what it's like to approach new information with the agenda of isolating the relevant pieces. Most importantly, I know what it's like to be daunted by the Science section, and I know how to help students overcome that intimidation to give confident answers.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. Basic Algebra skills are something I use every day, so I'm spoiled for real-world examples when tailoring lessons to students. I've improved students grades and helped with homework, but I'm proudest of the confidence that I give my students in their firm foundation in mathematics.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. I use algebra every day to solve problems. Algebra 2 can be concept-heavy and intimidating to students, which is perfectly within my wheelhouse! My career gives me real-world examples and strong conceptual understanding that can give students a more tangible grasp of the subject material.
Biology

Biology

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. I remember what it was like to be a student learning biology; the subject wasn't hard, but it was a lot. With so much ground to cover, it can be intimidating to try to tackle it all. But, my experience tutoring life sciences and environmental engineering are a huge aid for pulling real-world examples and analogies to give support and comfort to my students.
Calculus

Calculus

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. Calculus holds a special honor in my heart because it's what convinced me to pursue engineering, and it's the first math class that made me appreciate the subject. Many students can get lost in calculus' many mechanics and new operations, but I've brought success to students with my strong emphasis on concepts.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. Chemistry is weird--it operates at a small scale where the rules are unintuitive to a first-learner, and I remember what that's like as a student. My career has given me a comfort with these ideas that can be passed along to students with many real-world examples and analogies. Chemistry doesn't have to be hard--it's just different.
Chess

Chess

I've played chess for 20 years, and am active in a club where I play daily in-person games. I have experience teaching people of all ages in chess: I've taught people who don't know how to move the pieces, as well as intermediate players wanting to refine their opening theory.
Geometry

Geometry

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. Basic geometry skills are something I use every day, so I'm spoiled for real-world examples when tailoring lessons to students. I've improved students' grades and helped with homework, but I'm proudest of the confidence that I give my students in their firm foundation in mathematics.
Grammar

Grammar

Most English teachers have been isolated in the academic bubble for so long, they have forgotten what it was like to have learned these ideas in the first place. If you want a practical communicator with direct explanations, then I am the Guy who can help you. My background in STEM subjects helps me to stay grounded, with simple conveyance of grammar, vocabulary, and standardized test prep for the English language.

I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. Basic math skills are something I use every day, so I'm spoiled for real-world examples when tailoring lessons to students. I've improved students grades and helped with homework, but I'm proudest of the confidence that I give my students in their firm foundation in mathematics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. I use a concept-first approach that helps students in classes like precalculus and onward, as the math becomes less about repeated mechanics and more about understanding what operations to apply and why. Precalculus doesn't need to be hard: I aim to build a student's foundation as they progress confidently into higher math.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a minor in Secondary Education, with roughly 4 years of relevant tutoring experience. I got my start tutoring in STEM subjects when I was in college, but now I've gained much more experience tutoring at the high school level in math and science, as well as standardized test prep. I use trigonometry every day to solve real-world problems in my career. Trig is this tough mix of heavy concepts mixed with daunting new tools that are deceptively easy to use. But, I still remember what it was like to be a student and seeing these things for the first time. These straightforward examples can help to give confidence and support as we strengthen these ideas.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Most English teachers have been isolated in the academic bubble for so long, they have forgotten what it was like to have learned these ideas in the first place. If you want a practical communicator with direct explanations, then I am the Guy who can help you. My background in STEM subjects helps me to stay grounded, with simple conveyance of grammar, vocabulary, and standardized test prep for the English language.
