Hello!! My name is Claire T. I am 38 years old. When I was in college my dad gave me the timeless advice of figuring out my passions and making that my career. I knew I always wanted to work with kids and be connected to nature. For many years, I took kids on outdoor adventures--hiking, camping, and canoeing. When I was 28 I became an elementary teacher and taught in the classroom for 8 years.
Two years ago I began working with an outdoor education program and decided to get back to my original roots. Currently I work part time with Live Oak Wilderness Camp and tutor, as well. I enjoy tutoring because of the focus on the individual that is able to happen when working 1-1 or in smaller groups.
I taught Elementary Math for 5 years and understand the methods in teaching conceptual math to students. Often parents struggle to teach Common Core Math because it is not how we learned. It takes time to truly understand how to teach this way and I have had that time and understand the concepts. I understand the step by step processes and how to figure out where each child is struggling and to meet them where they are in the process. Math can be hard for many students and I truly believe everyone can learn!
I love reading. I enjoy sharing this enjoyment of reading with my students (and my friends and family!). I value both fiction and non-fiction and have years of experience teaching the tools kids need to be great readers, and more importantly, enjoy reading.
During these weird COVID times, I can bring the calm in the school storm!! No matter what I am teaching, I believe relationship matters the most!! I look forward to getting to know your child, what they are passionate about, connecting on our similarities, and celebrating our differences. I am currently building my tutoring schedule and hope to find a consistent day and time of each week that works for both of us.
