About Bethany

Bio

I work with all grade levels, from elementary school through the college level. I specialize in adapting my lessons to each individual student and their needs, and have a wide range of experience in taking a student's stage of life and unique struggles into account. While I mainly work with students in math and science as that is usually where the need is, I can assist in writing/ELA, social studies, Latin or Spanish as well.

My goal is to train students to not need me by showing them how to recognize and compensate for their academic weaknesses and biggest challenges through behavioral adaptation. After working with me, they will move forward into their future equipped with skills that will support them throughout their lives.

I worked as a specially trained peer writing consultant at Columbus State University's groundbreaking Writing Center under Dr. Lape, 2007-2009. I scored highly on the ACT and the SAT both on my first attempt (32/1460), and I have taught Algebra I/II, Geometry and Precalculus in the classroom.

I specialize in working with students with learning and behavioral disorders, or who simply struggle in school and academia due to a variety of reasons. In these situations I work with the students as a general "homework coach" working consistently with struggling students to fill knowledge gaps in all areas, complete assignments, and teach them study skills and positive behavioral adaptations.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 in the classroom, and it is also a common subject that I have tutored during my 10 years as a professional tutor. This means that I have seen the subject from both sides, and often know the typical struggles that students face in this class.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught Geometry/Algebra I/Algebra II and Pre-Calculus in the classroom. This gives me a unique perspective in math, as I know what areas usually trip students up the most, and where they likely don't have class time to go in depth.
Biology

Biology

I have over twelve years experience as a math and science tutor, and therefore have helped students through biology courses dozens upon dozens of times. From the Krebs cycle to meiosis/mitosis to study skills to keep it all locked in, I've got it!
Drawing

Drawing

I have a Bachelor's of Art degree from University of Georgia, 2011. I was an art major, focusing on design. I took all the prerequisite drawing courses to receive this major. I also draw every day as a jewelry designer, and submit sketches to clients for review and approval.
English

English

I was taught how to teach writing (all writing, but with a focus on academic and research writing but also creative). The training that we went through for this program was rigorous, and ensured a good understanding of APA and MLA guidelines. I also worked as a staff writer and editor at the Saber in Columbus, Georgia for 2 years, writing and editing dozens upon dozens of articles. I know how to break down grammar rules and punctuation and thesis and form that slipped over kids' heads when they first saw them, but that need to be re-taught and instilled in them so that they can be more powerful communicators.
Geometry

Geometry

I have 10 years of experience tutoring. The majority of my students are 9-10 graders, most of whom are taking Algebra 1 or Geometry, so I have helped students with these subjects for years. This also helps me understand what is likely to be confusing about the topic. I have also taught Geometry in the classroom, which provides me with an even greater understanding of the topics that students must master in order to succeed in Geometry.
Painting

Painting

I attended the highly competitive Georgia Governor's Honors Program in 2005 for visual art. I also have a Bachelor's of Art degree from University of Georgia, 2011. I was an art major, focusing on design. I took all the prerequisite drawing and painting courses to receive this major. I also draw and paint every day as a jewelry designer, and submit sketches to clients for review and approval.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I taught prepalculus in the classroom and have taught it as a tutor for over ten years.
Reading

Reading

I started reading at a young age and was a voracious reader. It wasn't until after college that I realized that I was dyslexic and that I had found tools to work around my dyslexia. While working with students who have similar struggles, I am able to guide them to real life strategies that can provide them with success.
Writing

Writing

Trained as a peer writing consultant at Columbus State University in 2006-2008, one of my passions is improving reading comprehension and reading skills with all of my students. Communication is a powerful thing, and every student should be well equipped with it.

Fantastic tutor

Bethany did so much for my grandson, Bryan. He went into his ACT with confidence! She never gave up on him. Still waiting for his score, but I'm sure he improved 100%. He was prepared. Will hire her again if he need to take test in September. Thank you, Bethany for believing in my grandson. You are wonderful!
