About Linda

My experience in teaching dates back 30-plus years. After a degree in French (and one year studying in Paris), I briefly taught French at LSU. After obtaining an MBA and a CPA certificate, I began teaching accounting at the University of New Orleans in 1983 -- 30 years this fall!

In the interim, I obtained a law degree and worked for a large local firm and for a large corporation. I have continued to teach at UNO on an intermittent basis, and currently teach accounting, finance, law and ethics in its graduate engineering program - something like an MBA for engineers.

Because I teach so many international students, and because I remember the obstacles of becoming fluent in a second language in another country, I am interested in teaching English as a second (or foreign) language. I am currently pursuing certification as an ESL teacher. In the meantime, I would like to begin tutoring, and feel fully qualified to begin. I understand the need to encourage conversations in English, work through mistakes, and have fun in the process!

I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling (mostly to France!), and am an ardent pet lover. I achieve the most professional satisfaction from teaching, and thus I choose not to practice law or accounting, but strive for teaching opportunities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have an MBA with a concentration in Accounting, and a CPA certificate. I am also a lawyer and have worked for a large law firm and a Fortune 500 Company. Most importantly, I teach business courses to graduate engineers, and have for 6-7 years. I have taught accounting for 30 years.

Financial Accounting

I became a CPA in Louisiana in 1983. I began teaching in the Accounting Department of UNO in the fall of 1983 and taught full-time for 4 1/2 years. Since then, I have continued to teach intermittently at UNO, at Loyola, and for a CPA review program. I currently teach accounting, law and ethics to graduate students in a UNO master's degree program.

French

I have a degree in French from Tulane University and spent my junior year in Paris where I further developed my abilities in spoken and written French. I have taught French at the college and high school level and have tutored French intermittently for years. I belong to the Alliance Fran├žaise and Les Causeries du Lundi (a French society in New Orleans).

Law

I graduated cum laude from law school where I served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. Following law school, I was fortunate to be selected as a law clerk to a federal court judge. After that one year appointment, I became an associate at a very prestigious local law firm. Finally, I was hired as a senior counsel in the law department of a Fortune 500 company. Law has given me extensive experience in writing and editing. My teaching experience comes largely from having taught and tutored accounting and French for over 30 years.

Managerial Accounting

I became a CPA in Louisiana in 1983. I began teaching in the Accounting Department of UNO in the fall of 1983 and taught full-time for 4 1/2 years. Great tutor!

Linda tutored me in principles of accounting. I was pretty lost before I went to see her, but Mrs. S. really helped me to understand the information. She was very patient with me, and she helped me to cover a lot of information and truly understand it. I went from failing the first test to getting a B on the final. Thanks again!
