About Michael

I graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in accounting, and I received my master's degree in accounting from Southern University in 1995. I have tutored children in elementary mathematics, ELA and Algebra 1 for over 25 years. I also worked as a substitute teacher for the parishes of St. Landry and East Baton Rouge. Currently, I am an auditor with the La. Dept. of Insurance, where I have employed there for 16 years.

I was instrumental in organizing the Leap Partnership, which is coalition of educators, parents, and concerned citizens, whose sole purpose is to prepare 4th and 8th graders for the Leap Test. This organization was founded in Lafayette, La. in 2004, and there has been over 150 students who have participated in the program. In addition, I have coached youth soccer for the last seven years.

I am very patient, and I make sure the student thoroughly understands a topic before moving on. I motivate the student to succeed and teach good study skills and test-taking skills. Normally, I use the student's textbooks and classroom materials during our lessons. Students do best when they are encouraged and receive positive feedback.

The following is a list of subjects I tutor: Elementary Mathematics, Elementary Algebra, Accounting, and Soccer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Furthermore, I have tutored high school students in Algebra and English. My methodolgoy is to have high expectations for the students that I am tutoring so that they can have the self confidence to excel in their respective subjects. Lastly, I am very passionate about my tutoring because I like to see good results.

Soccer

I have coached youth soccer with the Lafayette Youth Soccer Association for seven years. Last year, my U7 Boys team was second runner up in Fall Tournament.

I have the patience to make the young player become skillful in the game of soccer. I also have coaching experience in basketball because I am an assistance coach on my son's AAU basketball team.

Study Skills

I have over 20 years of tutoring experience. Over the years, I have developed techniques that motivate students to take greater interest in their school work. Essentially, I give them positive feedback, and I let them know that I have high expectations for them.

These intangibles have proven to be beneficial because some children may develop low self esteem based on test results, but they may lack the study skills and motivation on how to be resilient even if they struggled with a test. Moreover, my technique also involves getting the student to be more proactive with their school work.
