Hello! My name is Benjamin, or Ben if you prefer. I graduated with my BA in English and a minor in Art History in 2017 and began tutoring soon after that. Even after graduating from college, I felt that I could have learned even more. Eventually, this unquenchable thirst for knowledge drove me to get my MFA in Creative Writing, which I just received this year. During the course of my graduate studies, I taught English 101 and 102 at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where I taught students the research and writing skills that will be integral to their success in college. In addition to teaching these introductory writing classes, I have also been tutoring writing and reading for almost six years in a variety of settings, most recently at the writing center at UNLV. I've tutored people of all backgrounds and ages, including ESL at non-profits and international schools.
While I am most passionate about literature and all things having to do with the English language, I understand that this is not everyone's favorite subject - and that's okay! I want you to know that the writing and reading skills you'll learn with me will help you discover your own passion, and inevitably help you excel in that field when you do find it. With that said, the most important part of teaching and tutoring is forging a connection in which I come to understand what you need in the present moment. This is something that your teacher simply doesn't have the time to do. Therefore, my tutoring methods are dynamic and centered around the hands-on practice you might not have time for in class. This means helping you in every step of the writing process and then reflecting on each step as you progress. This practice is called "metacognition," otherwise known as "mindfulness" when it's applied to everyday life. Writing effectively is about seeing the whole as the sum of its parts, and this is how you'll begin to see your studies after a few sessions with me.
