I bring 38 years of classroom experience, expertise and dependability to the job. I have taught students from the 8th grade to the 12th grade in both literature and composition. I have also taught Honors Classes on the same levels as well as Advanced Placement courses in Literature and Language Composition.
For the last 38 years, I have divided my career between Brother Martin High School in New Orleans and St. Paul’s School in Covington, two Catholic institutions renowned for the quality of their education and the accomplishments of their students. In my years at these schools I have been part of an evolving and changing curriculum, and have proven extremely adept at preparing students for their entrance into college and the world beyond.
The reason for this is my love of the job.
I enjoy teaching: I enjoy engaging my students. I have a passion for literature that I have always managed to share with them, from the dark asides of a melancholy prince who wishes he were “a little less than kin and more than kind” to the joyous awakening inspired by the dust of snow dropped by a crow in winter. I have a familiarity with the materials of my subject that comes only from a love of exploring literature’s journeys again and again, from the classic voyages of the wild and defiant Odysseus to the gloomy travels of a young Marlow steaming slowly towards the heart of darkness at river’s end.
And I enjoy writing: all my life I have been a writer, choosing words, spinning sentences and unraveling page after page of material in an almost comical quest for publication, a quest measured by the sheer number of personal rejections from some of the most prestigious magazines in the nation. Where so many students and even adults see writing as a chore, I find a joy of expression and that I have shared with my students again and again for over
