Hi, I'm Michael! I have eight years of teaching and tutoring experience in Social Studies, from middle school all the way to graduate school. I have tutored students one-on-one, and taught classes of 120 students. I have a strong background in all Social Studies subjects, and I specialize in History and Geography, as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I am also an excellent writer who can help you improve your writing skills, whether you are writing an essay for your high school class or a graduate student trying to get published professionally.

For my undergraduate education at Louisiana State University (LSU), I earned B.A. degrees in both Geography and History, graduating summa cum laude in 2018. I continued my education at LSU, earning a M.S. degree in Geography in 2021. I am returning to school at LSU part-time to complete a PhD in Geography. I have also had my work published in two professional scientific journals so far, with a book chapter for an anthology being published soon.

As part of my B.A. degree in History, I had a concentration in Secondary Education. I became a certified Social Studies teacher for Grades 6-12 in the state of Louisiana through completing LSU's GeauxTeach program. As part of this training, I completed hundreds of hours of student teaching at local high schools and middle schools. I also worked as a supplemental instructor at LSU in 2017, and then worked as a graduate teaching assistant for two years while completing my Master's degree. I have had the wonderful opportunity to teach part-time at LSU as an adjunct instructor starting in 2023. I have taught two 1000-level geography courses, and 4000-level and 7000-level GIS courses.

As my full-time career, I work for the City-Parish of Baton Rouge as a GIS analyst. Teaching has always been a passion of mine. Although I am an all-around history buff, the Classical World is my favorite area of history to study, and has been since I was young. A significant portion of my coursework for my B.A. degree in History was focused on the Classical World. I also took 6 years of Latin between high school and college, and I even took a summer course for 3 weeks in Greece in 2016, which was an incredible experience! There are few things I enjoy teaching more than Greco-Roman history and culture.

I have written and successfully defended two thesis papers at the university level, and I have also published my work to multiple professional scientific journals. Being a history major before pivoting to GIS has given me experience writing dozens of essays covering a wide variety of topics, and this has made me a versatile writer.

Learning about religion as an important aspect of human culture was a critical part of many courses I took as part of my B.A. degrees in both History and Geography. I have taught a human geography course at LSU about Africa and Asia, and the major world religions originating from these continents was a focus of the course. I have always been fascinated with religions, from both a theological and societal perspective.

I hold an E license from the US Soccer Federation. I have been an assistant coach at the high school level for the last 11 years, since my playing days have ended. I also have extensive experience planning and running tournaments. I primarily coach the high school age group, but I have coached players as young as the U7 level, all the way to U18s.

Knowledgable, patient, and experienced

I reached out to Michael about an ArcGIS crime analysis project that was giving me a lot of trouble, and he was extremely patient while guiding me through it. By drawing from his own experience in crime analysis, I learned a lot about how I can use ArcGIS to map out my data and what tools to use. I had a lot of questions, and some aspects of my project needed trial and error, but Michael was very helpful and made sure to answer my questions with a clear explanation. I was able to successfully complete my project with his help. I would highly recommend!
