Hi! I'm Keemia. I'm a UC Berkeley graduate, college counselor, and English tutor whose mission is to help my students become creative thinkers and smart communicators. I have four years of private tutoring experience from K-12 and beyond, where I've helped students develop the tools and have the support they need to succeed at the most critical -- and stressful -- juncture of their lives. My students have gotten into top-ranked schools including UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, UC San Diego, and Cal-Poly SLO.
With a professional background in journalism, and marketing, I'm an expert at building personal narratives that help college applicants stand out and remain authentic. During our sessions, I help students map out their interests, extracurriculars, coursework, and major into a cohesive story that clearly spells out their potential impact, making it as easy as possible for admissions officers to advocate for them come decision day.
I specialize in making sure high school and community college students from all backgrounds have every resource available to them in order to succeed, and have personally coached applicants with academic struggles, nontraditional backgrounds, and to-be-determined career goals. My hands-on, holistic, and comprehensive approach ensures that students are able to express exactly what they bring to the table -- and why they deserve to be at it -- both on and off-campus.
My time at Berkeley's English Department (the top-ranked dept. in the country) impressed upon me just how important literacy is to the modern world. My students learn to articulate their thoughts, make analytic connections, and craft intelligent arguments. Lessons typically start with freewrites, ensuring students develop their own voice, before moving into passage analysis and formal writing practice. This format adapts to the focus subject -- including test prep, persuasive writing, close reading, etc. My students have gained admission to competitive academic programs, including Davidson Institute writing courses.
