I come to tutoring from an unconventional path: I hold a BA in history and biblical languages, and I'm currently pursuing a Master's in archaeology and biblical studies through Lipscomb University's Lanier Center for Archaeology. Alongside my coursework, I've spent four excavation seasons in Israel at four sites doing hands-on fieldwork that has deepened both my historical knowledge and my ability to explain complex ideas clearly to people encountering them for the first time. Explaining a site's stratigraphy to a curious visitor on a dig, or walking a student through why a particular historical period unfolded the way it did, draws on the same skill: breaking down something dense into something a person can actually follow and get curious about.
My tutoring focus is American history and academic writing and reading, primarily for middle and high school students, though I'm comfortable working with students from upper elementary through college level across the humanities. I currently work one-on-one, homeschooling two children in a family setting, which has given me real, ongoing experience adapting my teaching style to different ages and learning paces, from foundational reading skills with a first grader to more independent, discussion-based work. That experience has shown me how much tutoring depends on meeting a student where they are rather than teaching from a script.
My approach centers on building genuine understanding rather than memorization. For history, that means helping students see the throughlines and cause-and-effect that make events make sense, not just recall dates. For writing and reading, it means working closely on structure, argument, and voice, helping a student find their own way of expressing an idea clearly rather than imposing mine. As an archaeologist in training I consider myself an life-long excavator of knowledge, curiosity, and joy in all areas of my life and would love to help your student cultivate the same skills no matter the material.
