I graduated from Western Kentucky University summa cum laude with a BA in English & Allied Language Arts and a BA in Spanish with teacher certification for grades 8-12. While at WKU, I was awarded the WKU Outstanding English and Allied Arts Major Award, the Noma Dunn Scholarship for outstanding achievement in English, and the Joyce & L.D. Rasdall Scholarship for Christian leadership. I worked as a peer tutor at WKU's "Learning Center." My classmates also affectionately nicknamed me "The Grammar Hammer" for my editing prowess.
After graduating, I was offered teaching positions at four different public schools and a private school--at every place I applied. I taught for two years at a public high school. During those two years, I taught AP English Language and Composition to juniors, English IV, Advanced English II, Advanced English I, and Spanish II. While there, I was nominated for Teacher of the Year my first year, and I helped our school transition an advanced English III class into an AP English Language and Composition class. Over 75% of my students passed the AP exam with a score of 3 or above! I resigned when my husband and I decided to begin our family so that I could stay home and invest in our children.
Once home with our children, my next adventure began: Homeschooling. I have homeschooled my five children now since 2013 and have experience selecting and planning curriculum for PreK through 9th grade. While our children were a part of various homeschool communities where students attend school part time, I taught kindergarten for three years. I also worked as the Elementary Department Head and Communications Coordinator for a new private homeschool tutoring service for two years.
In addition to direct teaching experience in the classroom and at home with my own children, since 2013 I have worked for a company that provides educational assessment development services. We author, edit, and evaluate standardized tests for large testing companies.
