Hi, I'm Jessica! Nice to (virtually) meet you. I am an online English teacher/tutor with degrees in English and Humanities, the latter of which includes specializations in Literature, Linguistics, and Classical and Modern Languages. I also have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teaching certification.

When I was three years old, I learned to read and write, and that was when my life began. I developed such a passion for English that I pursued it all throughout school and have now worked as a writer, an editor, and even a best-selling novelist. For the past five years, I have channeled that passion for English into both asynchronous and synchronous reading and writing lessons for elementary, middle, and high school students. I particularly enjoy working with students in middle school, as I think this is where a lot of students need help solidifying what they learned in elementary school so that they can be ready to learn what they need in high school. I also highly enjoy working with ESL students, as I myself am a second-language learner (Italian) and can relate to the struggles they have.

My approach to teaching is to bring some fun to the lessons along with the information that students need. I cater in-class texts to each individual student, so that they can approach the subjects of reading and writing with a sense of excitement or intrigue as opposed to that familiar air of, "ugh, time for my English lesson again..." I think of myself as a "teacher tutor," meaning that I like to plan lessons in advance and form them around a specific topic. I provide reading materials and writing assignments that we can go over for each lesson, which gives us a chance to see grammar and other important elements in action. If your child is struggling in a certain area, I will design lessons around that particular topic to help them grasp the right concepts or even get them ahead in class.

For more information on my teaching style or for any questions, please feel free to send me a message!

Reading

Reading

Through both asynchronous (text based or recorded lessons) and synchronous (live classes), I have helped countless students improve their reading comprehension. From the classics to more modern fare, I assist students in finding meaning, themes, and other important elements in texts. I also help them to learn new words with context clues and to reach (or surpass) the goals for their current grade's recommended reading level.
Writing

Writing

As a writer myself, I highly enjoy helping students to improve their academic and creative writing. I know what it takes to write material that captures people's attention -- as well as earns a good grade in school. I have Bachelor's degrees in English and Humanities, and have worked as a professional editor for over 10 years. I have edited everything from novels to websites to 6th grade book reports, which I have treated with the same high level of importance. I am also trained and certified as a TEFL instructor, which helps me to explain grammar concepts to all my students with clarity, precision, and (I hope) memorability.
