Hi, I'm Duane! I graduated from Yale with a degree in Environmental Studies, after which I accepted the Yale-China Fellowship and taught 10th grade English for three years in central China. While I did not anticipate becoming a teacher long-term when I moved to China, I quickly learned that I love teaching! So, when I came back to the United States I took a middle school science teaching position, where I've been for the past three years.

As a teacher and a coach, I often get described as a cheerleader. I bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to my lessons and I like to present my instruction with my students, not for them. My teaching and tutoring are very collaborative: especially when it comes to science, I know my students have a great deal of lived experience with scientific phenomena, and I want to help them make connections between what they've seen and what scientists know (or think we know!). Through their own logical thinking, my students will arrive at an understanding of scientific concepts -- I'm just there to guide them and cheer them on!

I'm available to tutor not only in sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, and Geology, Environmental Science) but also Algebra, English, and Spanish. If you have any questions or are interested in scheduling a lesson, send me a message!

ACT Math

I earned a 34 on the ACT math section in high school. In college I studied environmental science, which required a ton of intensive math and physics courses. My experience helped me receive a perfect score on the math section of my teaching licensure exams and a nearly perfect score on the GRE math section. In summary, I would love to help you ace your standardized math tests too!
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

ACT Science

I scored a 34 on the ACT Science exam in high school, so I'm familiar with the test. In college and beyond, I have made the kinds of scientific graphs you would find on the exam as part of my degree programs and professional career. I am experienced in interpreting graphs and as a result I have a method for systematically and quickly reading a graph that I teach in my own science classroom.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have been teaching and tutoring math and science for the past four years. I am particularly experienced in teaching algebra, unit conversion, and geophysics. When I tutor algebra, I like to show students that they often already have the skills to logic out unfamiliar math problems -- a skill well-suited for standardized testing.

Botany

I earned my bachelors in Environmental Science at Yale, where I took courses in ecology and biology. Those courses built upon the foundations in plant science I earned through three botany classes in high school, two of which were independent studies. I also spent a summer teaching sustainable gardening techniques, all of which is to say that I am proficient in plant science!

Duane is a fantastic English teacher with lots of experience working with ESL students especially. He is patient and knows how to guide his students in small steps along the way. Duane is very humorous and actively engages in his lessons which makes learning fun. After two lessons, my child is very excited and looks forward to his next lesson with Duane already. I enthusiastically recommend Duane to anyone who’s looking for a good tutor. Tiffani

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

My screen was shared with Duane to demonstrate how to create a website on Google Sites, as well as how to access Google Classroom. Tutoring sessions took up a lot of my time, and he respected that. Duane was patient and willing to answer any questions I had. He was also open to trying different approaches to make sure I understood the material. The sessions were very helpful, and I was able to create the website and access the Google Classroom with ease.
