I’m rather a nerd for all things English: essays, narratives, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. The details about how to use the English language are like a game to me. I believe each one can learn to use the English language and communicate ideas clearly and masterfully. I love guiding students/writers to create essays that analyze: literature, persuasive articles, works of art, songs--anything.
My teacher friends asked me to review writings they intended for our colleagues because they trusted my knowledge of how to construct English.
Thirteen years of tutoring, in person and online, is informed by 33 years of teaching public high school and, a couple years, community college courses. For 10 years, I guided juniors in AP Language and Composition courses; most every one who took the exam, earned college credit.
I coach any type of writing, from beginning writers to doctoral writers; from blog posts to website text, including business emails--International Baccalaureate English students; TIQA-TIQA-C: topic sentence, introduce and quote, analyze, conclude; and TOEFL writing exam prep.
I prefer to Async review–without the student present–the student's most recent essay draft, scoring rubric and teacher comments, if available. Async Reviews are paid sessions during which I give in-line comments; from those I devise lessons that begin from the writer’s specific strengths and address areas of growth to practice in order to reach their full potential. Thus, my tutoring lessons specifically target this student.
I earned a Rank One at UofLouisville, KY. Subsequently, I created my portfolio to become Nat’l Board Certified in English, Youth & Young Adults.
I tutor to earn an income beyond my other careers: audiobook narrating/producing, text editing (non-fiction articles, award applications, blogs, novels, etc.), and garlic growing (w/ organic practices) and braiding the plants into a culinary, kitchen decor.

English

30 years of teaching English in public schools and tutoring privately have developed my tool box of strategies to teach students to use the English language well. I love to guide writers to use English to create masterful texts. During my teaching career, I have gained these certifications and degrees: National Board Certified Teacher, English Adolescent & Young Adult Rank 1, certified grades 7-12: English, Speech, Radio/TV, Mass Communications Masters Degree: English, Communications, Drama
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have tutored essay writing for more than 15 years. Prior to this private tutoring, I taught college and HS students to organize their thinking and gather information in order to determine their claim—their position—about a topic. I guided them to create powerful paragraphs and tie their argument together with guiding transitions. I’m confident I can help you craft masterful essays. In addition to my Masters and Rank I degrees, I am National Board Certified in English Youth and Young Adult and am certified by the KY Writing Project trainings.
Grammar

Grammar

During more than 30 years of experience helping students learn to express themselves well, I demonstrated for them how to use the constructions and rules of English. I'll give tips and tricks so you'll learn how to use grammar and mechanics well and to craft your writing as an artist does a masterpiece. I will analyze your revised draft of an essay or assignment for grammar, sentence construction, and punctuation skills for you to learn and apply as you revise the final draft. Lessons will focus on skills to learn in order to revise the current and future tasks.
Proofreading

Proofreading

For more than 30 years I've proofread and responded to student documents and devised lessons to help the writers learn how to improve their drafts to the next level. In your document, I will check for language flow, word choice and tone, appropriate headings and formatting as well as lower order elements: citations, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation skills for you to learn and apply as you revise the final draft of your document. If Lessons are requested, sessions will focus on skills you can learn to revise all documents and to apply in subsequent writing tasks. Even my colleagues would bring a document to me to proofread and suggest improvements, especially when they intended to publish it to our teaching colleagues and administrators--they trusted my knowledge and application of English rules and conventions.
Writing

Writing

Ten years experience teaching students to write AP Language and Composition type Essays developed my skill in responding to and tutoring writers. I design lessons that focus on skills needed to accomplish whatever task the prompt presents. A rough draft is a good place to begin a session so we can analyze what skills are needed in order to wisely focus our time together. Many courses and fields of study assign these types of essays (Review of Literature, Compare/contrast, Analysis of Fiction/Narrative for rhetorical and narrative devices, and narrative elements, Problem Solution, Description of a population, Case Study, Discussion Posts, Research Question development, Masters Thesis, Doctoral Dissertation).

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Ms. Lynn was able to connect with the student from the moment they first met. Although AP Language and Composition is a tough subject, she took the time first to talk about herself and learn about the student. This helped establish a connection allowing for better tutor session. We already schedule 2 more sessions, glad to be able to find a dedicated teacher like Ms. Lynn.

You Will Learn How To Write An Essay

Deborah makes the college writing process exponentially easier. Once you get through the first essay with her guidance, it's all light lifting from there. She starts by taking time to understand your goals and interests, then builds her lessons around them. For me, I needed to understand what to include and what to leave out in my PIQs for UC applications. She broke my goal into clear, actionable steps, starting with idea review and moving to sentence concision. She also kept documents for me to remember key writing, which allowed me to take away new knowledge after each lesson. After finishing a PIQ with her, I was able to jump to my next essay with the skills she taught me, drafting and revising on my own. Deborah is how you get your money's worth. —Adarsh S.

Perfectly fits my need

Deborah Lynn is a patient and experienced tutor. I was very confused about the grading of one of my writing assignment, and she helped me realize where I lost points. She thoroughly reviewed my work and helped me make my passage more clear.
