Hi! I'm Osama. I have been a student for what feels like (and honestly is) a very long time. Early on I was told that the best way to learn something was to teach it. So, I took every opportunity I could to teach, and tutor, and speak. Today, I'm a Geography graduate student and instructor at the University of Kentucky. I received bachelor’s degrees in Linguistics and Human Geography from the University of Wisconsin. As a student in the Humanities I spend most of my time reading, writing, and speaking. But I have found that my favorite art is teaching. I have five years of teaching experience at the university level in the fields of geography, history, health, and social science, all of which require an extensive training in critical reading and writing. I also have two years of experience teaching and tutoring elementary and middle school students on weekends. Teaching is my passion and I find the challenge of teaching different age groups stimulating and enjoyable.
When I was given my first classroom assignment a former professor of mine let me in on the secret of teaching. He said, "Forget all the techniques. If you love what you teach, you can teach it to anyone." I love writing. I also love woodworking. And I find that writing is a lot like woodworking; the planning, the outlining, the slow start that steadily picks up pace, the moment when you can see the finished product begin to emerge from all the scraps and parts, and the finishing (my favorite part) where you take your work from a rough attempt to a polished art piece. A final note about me; In addition to teaching, writing, and woodworking I enjoy horseback riding, I love hiking and long camping trips, and I treasure time with my family.
My teaching style is straight forward. I think people respond more to storytelling and personal experience than to facts and studies. When I teach reading, writing, or public speaking I like first to get an idea of what topics the student is already interested in or inspired by. And then I come up with a set o
