I have a Ph.D in Organic and Organometallic chemistry and I have taught large lecture classes in a university for the past 15 years. I have taught both general and organic chemistry courses. My teaching method involves guiding students to understand basic principles behind complex concepts. During my university teaching tenure, students have started to appreciate and begin to love organic chemistry which is one of the most challenging college chemistry courses. Similarly for general chemistry, I primarily focus on more problem solving which help students to understand the methodology in solving problems and also understand and connect different chemistry concepts. Most of the students having difficulty with chemistry is not actually chemistry, it is the math involved in chemistry calculations. So, as long as the students can do simple Algebra and understand mathematical operations, anyone can appreciate the world of chemistry.

Even though my university classes were nearly 400, I maintained regular office hours and review sessions for students to get more one-on-one support with their learning. I have enjoyed those small group or individual teaching moments as I could understand each of my students struggle and help with their progress. Each individual has different learning style. Sometimes making flashcards would work for some students but not for everyone. Working on the end of chapter problems, understanding the basic principles of chemistry, of course sometimes memorizing chemical formula would greatly help with learning chemistry and ultimately achieve impressive grade.

My biggest strength in tutoring is to understand the weak areas of my students first and start from there. Chemistry concepts are all build on each other. So, if you don't understand the basics, you will not be successful in understanding higher levels of chemistry. For examples, almost all of the organic chemistry concepts are based on general chemistry or AP chemistry concepts. So, it is better to review and refresh your general chemistry

Also, I teach them the connection between different concepts so that they can build a strong foundation in chemistry which will help in other higher level chemistry courses or even courses in their own major. Just rote memorization of solving problems is not going to help during exams, that why I emphasize on understanding the concepts.

Went from discouraged to more confident!

In just one lesson, JV helped me with some general chemistry that I was not understanding on my own. He helped me fully break down concepts into understandable, buildable pieces to fit the complex whole. JV was able to identify what I was missing and explain it manner that was tailored to the way I think. Could not recommend him enough!

Amazing at putting concepts together

Professor JV K has a priority of understanding the main core of concepts and has helped me put together so many different concepts. He broke it down in simple terms and made sure I understood it all and continued on to give mini quizzes before moving onto the next topic and concept.
