I believe that all students can learn math if they are allowed to explore the concepts in a way that makes sense to them. I emphasize a growth mindset when helping students since learning from mistakes is a natural way to develop understanding. Math should be fun and interesting, not frightening. My biggest joy has been in watching students develop confidence in their own ability to learn and understand math. I also work with students on their problem-solving and critical thinking skills since math proficiency is not just about computations and memorization of algorithms. I believe that practice is important, but practice without understanding will not yield long-term success.
I have taught every level of middle school and high school math plus statistics. Within the last 20 years, I have taught all levels of college math and statistics up through Calculus 2, including developmental levels. I was the primary professor teaching math for future elementary and middle school teachers, preparing them to work with the Common Core math standards. I have also done a significant amount of PRAXIS 1 and PRAXIS 2 math preparation.
