I have been a math teacher for 30 years: 8 years in high school and 20 + years in college. I have a Master's in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (math education). I just retired from teaching grades 6-12 virtually. I have tutored math for several years at both the middle school, high school, and college levels. I believe that all students can learn math if they are allowed to explore the concepts in a way that makes sense to them. I emphasize a growth mindset when helping students since learning from mistakes is a natural way to develop understanding. Math should be fun and interesting, not frightening. My biggest joy has been in watching students develop confidence in their own ability to learn and understand math. I also work with students on their problem-solving and critical thinking skills since math proficiency is not just about computations and memorization of algorithms. I believe that practice is important, but practice without understanding will not yield long-term success.
I have taught every level of middle school and high school math plus statistics. Within the last 20 years, I have taught all levels of college math and statistics up through Calculus 2, including developmental levels. I was the primary professor teaching math for future elementary and middle school teachers, preparing them to work with the Common Core math standards. I have also done a significant amount of PRAXIS 1 and PRAXIS 2 math preparation.
My teaching style is flexible and student-centered. I will make every effort to respond to requests quickly.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am a certified teacher, and I have taught and tutored Algebra 1 for over 10 years. I understand why students have difficulty with algebra in general, and I have been very successful in helping students understand and learn the material. I do not teach students how to memorize the material, but how to truly understand what they are learning.
Common Core

Common Core

For the last 5 years, I have been the primary teacher/trainer of common core mathematics standards and practices for preservice secondary, middle and elementary teachers. I have conducted several professional development sessions for in-service elementary teachers who struggled with the common core math content when it was first introduced. I have taught a graduate K-8 teacher education course specifically focused on helping in-service teachers learn how to understand and teach the CC standards and practices.
Finite Math

Finite Math

I have a master's in math and have taught several iterations of finite math over the last 20 years. The content I am familiar with is mathematical modeling, matrices, linear programming and optimization, combinatorics, probability, graph theory, logic, voting theory, etc. Different schools have somewhat similar course objectives.
Praxis

Praxis

I was a member of the Kentucky ETS PRAXIS review committee and participated in the ETS Praxis 2 review. I created a Praxis 1 math prep course for university students which resulted in a 95% first time passing rate. Students who took my math for elementary teachers had a 95% first time passing rate. The content is dense with problem-solving and critical thinking type problems, not algorithmic memorization, which is why it is difficult for so many students.
Sewing

Sewing

I have been sewing for over 40 years. I ran my own tailoring business for 2 years and made dresses for wedding parties for 2 years when my kids were small. I was trained by a tailor who apprenticed in Germany.
Soccer

Soccer

I have played soccer for over 40 years and yes - I still play! I was the starting sweeper for the CSU women's soccer team while in college. I also played left wing and midfield. I played one year of semipro after graduation. I have coached young children, including my own, for years and thoroughly enjoy it.
