Bio

I hold a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan. I've spent the past ten years as a math educator and curriculum writer, where I've taught at both the high school and college levels. I love math because I believe it's so fair: everyone can learn to be successful at it. I've taught classes of all sizes, from 6 students up to almost 200. One of the things I find to be most rewarding, is working with students individually during office hours or tutoring sessions to improve their grades and grow their math confidence.

Learning math is like learning to play a sport or a musical instrument. I believe that to understand math, you really need to do math. During a typical tutoring session, we'll work on lots of examples together. I'll walk you through an example to begin with and then we'll explore together what you're able to do. I'll be there with you every step of the way with hints and guidance and we'll spot patterns together of how to tackle particular types of problems, but it'll never be you just receiving all the answers from me. Everyone's journey of understanding math and getting great grades looks different. No matter where your starting point is, I'm excited to meet you where you are and for us to build together from there.

Let's work as a team towards your math goals! Please contact me to schedule our first session together, or if you have any questions for me before that, please don't hesitate to reach out :).

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is the language that transforms a tricky real life problem into math equations which we can solve. I've taught algebra classes before to both high school and college students. I really enjoy exploring the different ways a problem can be interpreted and solved and supporting my students in building up fluency with the processes and procedures in algebra. By gaining more familiarity with using algebra as a language, my students grow more confident in tackling more challenging algebra problems.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Calculus

Calculus

I have taught more than 15 class sections of calculus at both the college and high school levels, including one calculus class where I was the lead teacher and curriculum designer. Because of my multiple years' experience in the classroom and working with students one on one, I have worksheets and examples for any Calculus topic ready to go. Whatever you're struggling with, I have you covered and we'll figure it out together :).
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I think of building up a solution to a differential equation like a fun engineering problem. When we mix differentiation with addition and multiplication of functions, we get all sorts of fun equations that require creativity and different methods to solve. Differential equations show up naturally in the world around us in science, engineering and math. When I tutor differential equations, I enjoy working with students to understand different methods and patterns and when they're applicable.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I've worked as a TA for a college discrete math class before, as well as tutored students in discrete math. When first starting out, discrete math can feel very abstract to students and different from other math they've done in the past. I love making proof-writing feel much less daunting by collaborating with students to organize ideas and build them into a chain of logical reasoning.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have designed and taught my own college Linear Algebra class and absolutely loved it. Linear Algebra tutoring is all about connecting abstract ideas about vector spaces and linear maps to very concrete calculations we can do with matrices. As a Linear Algebra tutor, I work collaboratively with my students to build up and strengthen those connections along with their confidence in communicating their mathematical arguments.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I've taught precalculus classes at both high school and university as well as tutored precalculus students. There can be quite a bit of complexity in precalculus problems, particularly word problems and conceptual problems. I really enjoy working collaboratively with students to break down those difficulties and organize big questions into small manageable chunks that they can then tackle successfully.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a subject I really enjoy teaching. I find it incredibly beautiful how much we can understand about the world around us from just a deep understanding of how triangles and circles work. When I teach trigonometry, I always make sure to emphasize clear, well-labelled diagrams and how we can use those to draw insights in problem-solving. My students are then able to apply this step-by-step clarity and the patterns we find together to solving a wide range of problems.

Fantastic Linear Algebra Tutor!

Lara is an amazing linear algebra tutor! She explains concepts really clearly and always makes sure I actually understand the material instead of just memorizing it. She’s super patient and breaks down even the most complicated problems into simple steps that are easy to follow. I always feel comfortable asking questions, and she never makes me feel bad for needing extra help. Thanks to her, I’m so much more confident in class and my grades have improved a lot. I highly recommend her to anyone who needs help with linear algebra!

Greatly Helped Me Improve My Math Skills

I first booked Laura because I needed help improving my ACT math score which was 3 weeks away. I am currently on my second week of working with her and have already seen a great improvement of my math understanding and knowledge to fill in the gaps that my traditional schooling left. I leave every session feeling better about myself in terms of my math capabilities. I often doubt myself when it comes to this subject, but she never makes me feel like I am not good enough for getting something wrong. While I haven’t taken the ACT yet, I have improved in math all around which is so helpful. I can get through ACT practice questions or other kind of math homework far easier than before. I have improved in my algebraic thinking and realized I am not that bad at math after all! P.S.- She’s really good at triangles.

First lesson.

Today went very well. The new vocabulary was explained to me a simple way for it to all make sense. I got to do my first matrix. We did everything step by step and explaining it along the way was very helpful.

Great tutor

Lara D. helped me with my differential calculus class. Through this difficult class Lara instructed me on the proper way to do the problems and explained the process step by step. She was very patient and dedicated and I managed to pass my class with my desired grade.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Lara helped me review information that was not as fresh in my mind about inverse trig functions and the limits of exponential functions, breaking down the parts that I struggled with while making me actually provide answers to the pieces that I had to ensure that everything sunk in. She really took the time to acknowledge the parts of each concept that I knew while identifying some areas that may not have been explored thoroughly enough. Overall a very positive experience that really allowed me to slow down and process the concepts within the lesson.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

As I worked through polynomial inequalities she helped me work through problems nudging me in the right direction with helpful hints, allowing me to learn rather than just telling me. Helped me develop the skills I need to success rather than just memorize. Answered my questions and gave all the help I needed in a kind manner.

Wonderful for kinetic learners!

Lara is a wonderful tutor. She explained things very well and took time to clarify when I didn't grasp something. Wonderful for kinetic learners! She is incredibly patient and encouraging! For someone who struggles with math, the verbal encouragement was valuable. After a session with Lara I feel empowered to keep going! I'm already scheduling my next session.

Explains super well and very knowledgable!

Lara was great and really helped me understand mathematical induction better. I was at it for weeks trying to wrap my head around it, and one session with her helped me leap forward in understanding the concept. I highly recommend. She's also a very sweet and patient person.
