I'm Julia! I graduated from the University of Chicago with honors as a double major in Chemistry and Romance languages. My two very different majors granted me both a strong command of STEM subjects as well as strong reading and writing abilities. As a result, I am a well-rounded tutor, which is reflected in my nearly ten years of experience tutoring students ranging from kindergarten to college. I have taught kindergarteners how to read and helped college students excel in their science courses. As a tutor and long term substitute teacher, I have also worked with many students with ASD and ADHD, as well as English Language Learners (ELL) student. I currently work at a Title I elementary school as student support, supporting my own small groups in reading and math on a daily basis.

I prefer to tailor my lesson plans to suit student needs. For students who have fallen behind in their coursework, I start with a mini lesson on a topic they are struggling with, then dive into assisting with missing work. This allows us to reinforce what the student has learned in class while completing schoolwork to improve their grade. I typically conclude these lessons by working with the student to create a schedule that will allow them to stay on top of their assignments between tutoring sessions. This method was particularly effective for students struggling with remote schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. For students who are not struggling to meet deadlines, I begin sessions by introducing the topic in an engaging way, using real-world examples and/or student interests, before explicitly teaching the material. For solving problems, I provide guided examples using a slow-release model before providing students with independent practice opportunities.

Finally, as a high achieving student myself, I am also prepared to support students on their college and graduate school application journeys. I am available for standardized test tutoring as well as admissions essay feedback.

ADHD

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked with several students with ADHD who struggled to keep up with their virtual schoolwork. I taught lessons to reinforce content they did not retain from school sessions, assisted with missing work, and worked with the students to develop a work plan to stay on top of work between sessions. I have also worked for educational summer programs at the Field Museum of Natural History and Shedd Aquarium, specifically as an Inclusion Specialist, where I was responsible for supporting and adapting programming for students with various physical and learning disabilities, including ADHD.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I was a chemistry major in college at the University of Chicago and graduated with honors and a 3.5 GPA and received a 4 on the AP chemistry exam in high school. Since then, I have helped many college students at top universities (Columbia, Cornell) with their gen chem and organic chemistry coursework.

I have been a tutor for elementary age students for nearly 10 years, including supporting students during after school programming and virtual schooling during the pandemic. I have worked full-time as a substitute teacher for a year, including as a permanent building substitute at an elementary school since May. In this role, I have covered a 4th grade class for over 2 months while the teacher was on maternity leave, and have my own small teaching groups that I am responsible for on a daily basis. I also work for our after school program providing homework help to 5th graders, as well as coaching students for spelling bees and academic team competitions.

My daughter thought Julia was awesome. My daughter states that Julia was patient and very helpful. She made literacy fun for my daughter again. I appreciated the fact that she went over my daughter’s writing sample and helped her think about different ways to express her thoughts. She also gave my daughter pointers on how to improve her writing like using RACE. We will definitely be using her again.

Patient tutor

Julia R was a very good tutor. She is very patient and will help you understand topics you don’t know how to do. She responded to my question with details. For the time we had I was thought enough to do good of my chemistry test. I was stressing on not understanding but she helped me understand the concepts and break it down in a simpler way.
